Mini-BioBlitz at the ‘Apple a Day’ Orchard

Saturday 1 July 2023: Mini-BioBlitz from 10am – 1pm at the ‘Apple a day Orchard’ behind the Health Centre, Plymouth Rd. A BioBlitz is an ecological survey of an area or site involving the community (citizen scientists) and some experts, with the aim of identifying and recording as many species as possible in a short amount of time. So … come and see the wildlife in the Apple a Day Orchard at the South Brent Health Centre. Experts will be on hand, and you will learn how to identify and record wildflowers, animals, insects and mini beasts. This will highlight the natural beauty and increasing biodiversity of the wildflower patch and orchard, created by Sustainable South Brent’s ‘4Bs’ group (Brent Bees Bugs & Butterflies) and the community in 2019. The record we create will also serve as a new baseline to compare future surveys. Suitable for all ages … we’ll have more info on accessibility shortly. There is a car park at the Health Centre. Equipment provided – please BYO refreshments. All are welcome, but no dogs or other pets, please. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. Feel free to bring ID guides, notebooks, 1m quadrats, hand lenses, swoop nets etc if you have any – best to label them with your name. If the weather is extreme in any way, we will use the Hub as a base. If you have good knowledge of local species, especially grassland plants and insects, and would like to volunteer as an expert, please get in touch.
