SSB was set up in 2006 and is a charitable company limited by guarantee.

The organisation promotes and delivers actions, projects and initiatives that encourage public participation in helping to ensure the long term sustainability and character of the local area, at the same time increasing social cohesion and developing skill sets in the community.

This means:

  • meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
  • conserving and protecting the physical and natural environment, mitigating against the effects of climate change and impacting directly upon energy use.

Our aims are set down formally as ‘objects’ in our ‘Articles of Association’ and are also reflected in SSB’s current ‘vision statement’ which, following a members’ survey and extensive consultations, was initially launched at the 2021 AGM, and refined by a further resolution at the 2023 AGM:

“Creating a resilient, low-carbon community, where all life thrives”

SSB will achieve this by continuing our current innovative projects as well as creating new strategic focal points of Energy and Transport.

We welcome everyone in our community to be Inspired and Empowered to Collaborate with us in achieving this vision .

Why Sustainability?

Sustainable South Brent was born from a desire to take positive action to address the twin challenges of fossil fuel depletion and climate change. But these are just two symptoms of a global economic system that, due to natural resource constraints, cannot continue for ever.

Sustainable South Brent’s Articles of Association reflect this broader concern, with a definition of “sustainable development” based on that of the 1987 Brundtland Report released by the UN:

“Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Sustainable development means working towards a fairer society which looks after its resources.
It is a way of ensuring that in meeting our needs for water, food, shelter as well as engaging in work and leisure activities we don’t cause damage to our environment or deplete resources that we can’t renew.
