Bats – SSB Wildlife Talk
Friday 20 November 2026: SSB Wildlife/Nature Talks start again for a new series at 7.30pm in the Old School Community Centre. This first one is on Bats, with Sarah Butcher of Devon Bat Group.
Devon is incredibly lucky to have some really special bats that you often don’t find in the rest of the country. Devon Bat Group has recorded 16 species of British bats out of a potential 18, including Lesser and Greater Horseshoes, Nathusius Pipistrelles and Grey Long-eared bats. Devon supports such a significant proportion of UK bat species because of its mild climate, its diverse landscape with a complex pattern of different natural and farmed habitats for feeding and roosting, and its generally low levels of light pollution.
Sarah’s talk promises to be fascinating and packed with information about these rarely-seen nocturnal creatures.
This series of Wildlife/Nature talks will continue with another five going into the New Year (dates tbc).
– The next will be on Friday 11 December at 7.30pm with SSB’s own Tim Ferry discussing ‘Dartmoor Nature Recovery – why it’s difficult and what’s being done about it’. (see https://ssb.org.uk/event/ssb-wildlife-talk-2-dartmoor/).
