DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed until new year\, due to the forecast bad weather – if you would like to go on the waiting list please email info@sussh.org \n\nSaturday 23 November 2024: Home Composting Masterclass from 10-3pm at the SSB’s new home compost demonstration site at the Marsh Compost Site (Exeter Road South Brent TQ10 9QF) \nThis your chance to learn all you ever wanted to know about compost – and more! Sustainable South Hams ‘compost mentors’ ‘Dr Compost’\, Nicky Scott and Mel Harvey will guide you through different methods of home composting and the pros and cons of each. Learn about home composting methods such as ‘daleks’\, ‘green cones’\, ‘tumblers’\, ‘bokashi’\, ‘hot heaps’ and ‘biochar’. We’ll take a specific look at what to do with woody offcuts and learn about the power of biochar. Bring a sample of your own home compost and Nicky will make suggestions for how to improve it. \nPlease bring your own notepads\, cameras and ideally\, a pop-up chair\, plus lunch and snacks. There will be ample supplies of hot drinks. Although there is some shelter\, the event will be held outside\, so please dress accordingly. – And there is a lovely compost loo on site! \nThis all-day event is free for SSB Marsh volunteers (both compost and wood groups)\, who need to book on Eventbrite\, as below\, by 15th November. After that date\, any spaces left out of the 20 available\, will be available to other attendees\, with tickets costing £20. The event runs over 5 hours as there is so much to learn! \nNicky Scott has been around compost for most of his life from a Saturday job whilst still at school to coordinating the Devon Community Composting Network\, employed by Devon Local Authorities. He’s been Chair of the Community Composting Network\, is the founder of ‘Proper Job’ in Chagford and a regular contributor to compost forums around the world. Nicky has written many books about composting\, spoken at conferences here and abroad and runs innumerable compost workshops. Currently he is revising the third edition of ‘How to make and use Compost’ for Bloomsbury publications. SUMMARY:Scything Time - 2 - Raking the Hay
DESCRIPTION:5 years ago\, a hardworking bunch of SSB volunteers now known as ‘The 4Bs’ (Brent Bees Bugs & Butterflies) turned an overlooked patch of consistently mown grass verge in the Exeter Road / Play park area\, into a diverse wildflower meadow \n  \n… and every summer we scythe it. As we did yesterday (Saturday 10 August) \nOn Sunday 11 August from 10-12noon we will finish raking up the green hay and take it (with a vehicle) to the Marsh Composting site. Only limited help is available from volunteers to unload your garden waste or carry bags of compost to your car. If you collect compost\, please place £1 per 10kg bag donation in the box. DESCRIPTION:Sustainable South Brent’s Hedges and Woodland Group – The ‘Steepers’ \nWe undertake conservation projects like hedge laying and woodland coppicing\, as well as harvesting wood fuel\, in and around South Brent. We enjoy the traditional skills and satisfaction of working outdoors together\, while doing our bit to maintain diverse and healthy wildlife habitats. Our practical site work takes place fortnightly during the cutting season in autumn and winter to avoid disturbance to wildlife\, while in the summer we have a wider programme of walks\, visits\, firewood processing\, tool maintenance and outreach work. DESCRIPTION:The Marsh: SSB’s composting site: is open both to leave garden waste\, which is NEEDED\, and to buy compost . \nThe Marsh is now open on Sunday mornings from 10am-1pm . DESCRIPTION:The Marsh: SSB’s composting site: is open to leave garden waste\, which is NEEDED. \nHowever\, because of continued very high temperatures in the compost piles\, there will be NO COMPOST available for collection at present. More green garden waste (grass\, dead flowers\, weeds\, leaves) is especially welcome. Thank you also to those who have returned empty compost bags. \nNo physical help can be offered to visitors and social distancing of 2 metres must be maintained – sanitising materials will be provided. Only two vehicles will be allowed on site at one time plus maximum of two allowed to stack in the entrance layby. DESCRIPTION:As a result of the current pandemic situation\, the decision has been taken\, in consultation with lead volunteers\, that The Marsh\, SSB’s Composting and Reuse site will remain closed for the foreseeable future. We aim to follow the spirit of the government’s request for people to stay at home until the current National Lockdown ends. The volunteer rota will be re-instated nearer the time we can prepare for re-opening.

DESCRIPTION:SSB’s Marsh composting site will remain open on Sunday mornings from 10am-1pm for garden waste deliveries throughout lockdown as long as sufficient volunteers are available . \nDuring lockdown: \n\nSocial distancing must be observed on the site therefore minimal help can be offered for unloading garden waste or loading compost.\nThe number of vehicles on site will be controlled by the volunteers. No parking on the main road will be permitted while waiting fo entry into the site\nCompost may be purchased if it is available.\n\nIf you are wanting to buy compost\, please have the correct money ready (£1 per bag) to put into a cash box as volunteers will not handle any cash or give change.
