SUMMARY:Scything time!
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 10 August 2024: It’s Scything Time!: \n5 years ago\, a hardworking bunch of SSB volunteers now known as ‘The 4Bs’ (Brent Bees Bugs & Butterflies) turned an overlooked patch of consistently mown grass verge in the Exeter Road / Play park area\, into a diverse wildflower meadow \n  \n  \n… and every summer we scythe it. \nPlease join us (bring friends or family) from 10am–1pm (probably earlier if it’s hot). A chance to have a go at scything with some tuition from experienced scythers\, no experience necessary. No dogs please. Under 16s with responsible adults. Come for as little or long as you like. Please bring your own refreshments. \nOn Sunday 11 August from 10-12noon we will finish raking up the green hay and take it (with a vehicle) to the Marsh Composting site. Bring a rake if you can. \nThere will be other opportunities to scythe in Brent this year. See: https://ssb.org.uk/projects/brent-bees-bugs-and-butterflies-4bs/ \nThe 4Bs are still looking for a Project coordinator\, if you’re passionate about nature and have a bit of time to give you could help preserve this meadow and other projects that aim to increase biodiversity in South Brent. \nFFI contact beesbugs@ssb.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Skunk Cabbage Work Parties
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays 16 & 23 February\, 2 & 9 March 2022: Dartmoor Invasive Species Project – Volunteer Work Party: More recruits needed to help dig out invasive American Skunk-Cabbage in the South Brent area. Work with ecologist Mervyn Newman and Dartmoor Ranger Ella Briens on this interesting project which has now been running for 4 years\, following Mervyn’s survey for Dartmoor National Park to help plan for the control of invasive alien species. \nRanger Ella says “For those that have helped before you will remember that it is a muddy job requiring wellies and digging\, often taking us all to fascinating locations off the beaten track as we explore hidden catchment gems! The results have been really positive and we are keeping our fingers crossed that the project will continue together with targeting the Himalayan Balsam in the catchment. If you are able to help out at all it will be very much appreciated. Please share locally with anyone who you think may be interested!” \nPlease get in contact with Mervyn directly on invasives@dartmoor.gov.uk if you can lend a hand and for more details. Tools and treats provided. \n(These events are supported by SSB but are organised by Dartmoor National Park)

SUMMARY:South Brent Celebrates the Queen's Platinum Jubilee
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 2 – Sunday 5 June 2022: The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Central Weekend. On 6th February this year Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee\, marking 70 years of service. To celebrate this unprecedented anniversary\, events and initiatives will take place throughout the year\, culminating in a four day UK bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June. The bank holiday will provide an opportunity for communities and people throughout the United Kingdom to come together to celebrate the historic milestone\, including public events and community activities\, as well as national moments of reflection on The Queen’s 70 years of service – see: www.royal.uk/platinum-jubilee-central-weekend. \nSouth Brent Parish Council is planning to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee with four days of entertaining events for parishioners\, culminating with an open-air theatrical performance and a barbecue on the afternoon of Sunday 5th June. \nIt all starts on Bank Holiday Thursday 2 June\, when volunteers will dress the village for a party with bunting and flags. Entries for the Best Dressed Jubilee Shop Window competition will be judged\, together with contenders for the Best Decorated Garden on the Jubilee theme. Entry forms for the garden competition will be available at Cosy Corner Crafts in the centre of the village.  Cups and rosettes will be awarded to the winning entries. \nOn Friday 3 June\, there’ll be an evening of entertainment in the Village Hall\, with a showing of ‘A Queen is Crowned’\, the colour film of the Coronation narrated by Sir Laurence Olivier\, and a Fashion Show of costumes covering the Queen’s lifetime\, courtesy of South Brent Amateur Dramatic Society. Bar & refreshments. The event starts at 7.00pm and tickets will be available to parishioners only\, free of charge\, at artworks\, from Friday 20th May. \nSaturday 4 June sees the village invited to a Street Party at lunchtime. (It is hoped to hold the party in Church Street\, but as the surface is unsafe at present\, awaiting repairs by Devon County Council\, the location may have to be moved – watch out for notices.) The street party starts at mid-day\, on a ‘bring and share’ basis for food\, with teas\, coffees and soft drinks provided free of charge\, and runs until 2pm\, when the focus switches to Palstone Park for an afternoon of sports\, games and arts events for children\, from 3-6pm. These will include three-legged races\, tug-of-war\, cricket skills and outdoor cooking. In the Pavilion children will be able to take part in a range of arts and crafts activities. There’ll be a bouncy castle too for the younger ones. \nNB There will be a temporary Road Closure of Church Street in force between 10am and 3pm for the Street Party on Saturday 4 June. \nThe final day of celebration is on Sunday 5 June\, starting with a Civic Service of Thanksgiving for the Queen’s 70 years of duty\, at St.Petroc’s Parish Church at 9.30am. \nThen at 3pm in Palstone Park\, the professional theatre group Common Players will be presenting ‘Alice in Wonderland’\, their take on the Lewis Carroll classic. \n\n\n  \n  \n\n\nThe Players are well-known in Brent\, having made a highly successful visit last Summer with their tale of Robin Hood\, which played to a crowd of more than 300. Parishioners are invited to bring a ‘Mad Hatter’s Picnic’ and to dress to the theme if they wish. Teas\, coffees and soft drinks will be available. This is a ticket only event\, for residents of South Brent Parish\, and again free of charge\, with tickets available in person from artworks from Friday 20th May. There are limited numbers for both the ticketed events\, so get yours early. \nThe day comes to an end with a Barbecue (BYO drinks) at Palstone Park\, for which charges apply\, with music until 8pm. \nAll events sponsored by South Brent Parish Council & local councillors .
