SUMMARY:'Climate Change and the Extinction Rebellion’ meeting
DESCRIPTION:(NB this is not an SSB meeting) \n‘Climate Change and the Extinction Rebellion’ meeting at 7.30pm in the Old School Community Centre. An introductory meeting organised by people in South Brent concerned about climate change\, in order to discuss the background to the issues and the focus of the ‘Extinction Rebellion’ campaign. The ‘Extinction Rebellion’ (‘XR’) is an international movement that aims to promote radical change\, through nonviolent resistance and ‘respectful disruption’ and to signal to those in power the existence of an emergency situation that requires emergency action to minimise species extinction and avert climate breakdown. Its central demands are that the Government must tell the truth about the climate and wider ecological emergency\, and reverse inconsistent policies by enacting legally binding measures to reduce consumption levels\, and carbon emissions to net zero by 2025. SUMMARY:Film: 'Bag It'
DESCRIPTION:Screening organised by Sustainable South Brent (SSB) at 7.30pm in the Old School Community Centre. The 2010 documentary film ‘Bag It’ takes a closer look at our cultural love affair with plastics – try going a day without plastic. In this touching and often funny film\, we follow ‘everyman’ Jeb Berrier as he embarks on a global tour to unravel the complexities of our plastic world. Jeb’s journey starts with simple questions: “Are plastic bags really necessary? What are plastic bags made from? What happens to plastic bags after they are discarded?” and evolves into a wholesale investigation into plastic and its effect on our waterways\, oceans\, and even our own bodies. Jeb looks beyond plastic bags and discovers that virtually everything in modern society-from baby bottles\, to sports equipment\, to dental sealants\, to personal care products – is made with plastic or contains potentially harmful chemical additives used in the plastic-making process. When Jeb’s journey takes a personal twist\, we see how our crazy-for-plastic world has finally caught up with us and what we can do about it. Today. Right now. Donations welcome at the event.

SUMMARY:New Economics: talk by students from Shumacher College
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable South Brent presents ‘Economics as if Sustainability Mattered’: an interactive talk by students from Schumacher College’s ‘Economics for Transition’ Masters programme in the Old School Community Centre at 7.30pm. “Much of the economic theory that underlies the world we see around us today was developed in the 17th and 18th centuries\, when people were few and nature was many. What should an economics for the 21st century and beyond look like\, when people are many and the earth is increasingly constrained by their activity? We present an evening exploring exciting new options opened up by cutting edge ‘New economic’ thinking\, creating solutions to the problems caused by conventional economic theory and practice. We’ll explore ways in which new economy theory redefines our relationships to ourselves\, to our communities\, and to the rest of the living earth of which we are embedded.” The starting point of such thinking is ‘Economics as if people mattered’ – the sub-title of Schumacher’s ‘Small is Beautiful’ (1973). All Welcome!
