SUMMARY:IT skills sessions
DESCRIPTION:Free IT skills sessions every other Thursday starting again on Thursday 17 January 2019 and then fortnightly (31 January; 14; 28 February) from 7-9pm in the Old School Community Centre. Come and get your computer and phone problems sorted out and questions answered. Bring your questions and devices; explore\, play\, discover and build your confidence – all with the support and help of a group of experts (these are not formal\, structured lessons). For all levels – beginners to experienced users. Come to one session or many. Free\, but donations welcome. For further information see www.itsorted.org.uk/southbrent/. \nFree IT Skills Sessions – Could you be a helper? These sessions have proved to be quite popular and have helped many in our local community as well as raising money for our local charities. Our number of helpers is quite small and we really need a few more to keep these sessions viable. Do you think you could help? You don’t need to be available for every session as we organise numbers around helpers available. You don’t need to be an absolute expert\, if you are competent with using a smart phone or laptop you will probably find that’s enough. We use Google to help us solve problems and we are a real hive mind supporting and learning from each other to help our attendees. We would really value some more people with knowledge of Apple products\, most of our helpers are more Android and Windows based at the moment. You can find out more at http://www.itsorted.org.uk/southbrent/. So\, if you are a competent user of IT (not expert) and could spare the odd Thursday evening please get in contact with Massimo by email to massimo@itsorted.org.uk or call him on 01364 649290 or 07795 257849.

SUMMARY:'Climate Change and the Extinction Rebellion’ meeting
DESCRIPTION:(NB this is not an SSB meeting) \n‘Climate Change and the Extinction Rebellion’ meeting at 7.30pm in the Old School Community Centre. An introductory meeting organised by people in South Brent concerned about climate change\, in order to discuss the background to the issues and the focus of the ‘Extinction Rebellion’ campaign. The ‘Extinction Rebellion’ (‘XR’) is an international movement that aims to promote radical change\, through nonviolent resistance and ‘respectful disruption’ and to signal to those in power the existence of an emergency situation that requires emergency action to minimise species extinction and avert climate breakdown. Its central demands are that the Government must tell the truth about the climate and wider ecological emergency\, and reverse inconsistent policies by enacting legally binding measures to reduce consumption levels\, and carbon emissions to net zero by 2025. SUMMARY:Film: 'Bag It'
DESCRIPTION:Screening organised by Sustainable South Brent (SSB) at 7.30pm in the Old School Community Centre. The 2010 documentary film ‘Bag It’ takes a closer look at our cultural love affair with plastics – try going a day without plastic. In this touching and often funny film\, we follow ‘everyman’ Jeb Berrier as he embarks on a global tour to unravel the complexities of our plastic world. Jeb’s journey starts with simple questions: “Are plastic bags really necessary? What are plastic bags made from? What happens to plastic bags after they are discarded?” and evolves into a wholesale investigation into plastic and its effect on our waterways\, oceans\, and even our own bodies. Jeb looks beyond plastic bags and discovers that virtually everything in modern society-from baby bottles\, to sports equipment\, to dental sealants\, to personal care products – is made with plastic or contains potentially harmful chemical additives used in the plastic-making process. When Jeb’s journey takes a personal twist\, we see how our crazy-for-plastic world has finally caught up with us and what we can do about it. Today. Right now. Donations welcome at the event.

SUMMARY:New Economics: talk by students from Shumacher College
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable South Brent presents ‘Economics as if Sustainability Mattered’: an interactive talk by students from Schumacher College’s ‘Economics for Transition’ Masters programme in the Old School Community Centre at 7.30pm. “Much of the economic theory that underlies the world we see around us today was developed in the 17th and 18th centuries\, when people were few and nature was many. What should an economics for the 21st century and beyond look like\, when people are many and the earth is increasingly constrained by their activity? We present an evening exploring exciting new options opened up by cutting edge ‘New economic’ thinking\, creating solutions to the problems caused by conventional economic theory and practice. We’ll explore ways in which new economy theory redefines our relationships to ourselves\, to our communities\, and to the rest of the living earth of which we are embedded.” The starting point of such thinking is ‘Economics as if people mattered’ – the sub-title of Schumacher’s ‘Small is Beautiful’ (1973). All Welcome!
