DESCRIPTION:Saturday 26 November: Free Tree Giveaway at the Old School Community Centre between 10am & 12noon. Come and collect between one and five trees to plant in your garden! A range of broadleaf\, native trees and shrubs will be available first come\, first served. \nThis ‘tree hub’ day is being run by Sustainable South Brent with the trees provided by Devon Wildlife Trust. It is part of the wider ‘Saving Devon’s Treescapes’ partnership which is a response to the impact of Ash Dieback disease. The trees will all be small nursery transplants 20-40cm tall\, each provided with a cane and spiral guard as well as a planting and aftercare guide. \nJust turn up on the day – the event will run until all the trees are gone. Free childcare with healthy cooked lunches broadcasting\, singing\, circus\, costume making\, animation and more for ages 6-16. Alice Armstrong\, who was the Project Worker for the SSB Community Radio Project will be back in South Brent with Soundart Radio for this event\, which is part of a series of activities in our local area over the school holidays\, culminating in a beautiful\, co-created procession and immersive performance event on Sunday 2 January from 3-6pm at Dartington Hall\, created by the children for families to attend together. Join us this Winter to create a mysterious and wonderful pageant to celebrate the turning of the year. All welcome! \nSoundart is a licensed community radio station and an Ofsted registered holiday club. Our staff are qualified artists and all are DBS checked. Seasonal Spectacular is funded by Devon County Council’s Holiday Activities and Food programme\, and children eligible for free school meals will be prioritised. SUMMARY:Led cycle ride from South Brent to Ashburton return
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 15 August 2021: Led bike ride from South Brent to Ashburton and back\, starting from the Old School Community Centre\, South Brent at 10am. \nA ‘Big Bike Revival’ ride\, led by an experienced cyclist at an easy pace for the enjoyment of all riders along the proposed new safe cycle path extension of National Cycle Network route 2. The route links the three Dartmoor towns each with their own distinct character\, and the beautiful countryside of the lower moor. There will be a stop-over in Buckfastleigh for refreshments\, and later in Ashburton for lunch (total is about 18 miles return). Recently surveyed by Sustrans (the walking and cycling charity\, and the custodian of the National Cycle Network)\, the route has been proposed for development as a dedicated\, accessible cycle route\, to link the three towns into the overall network of cycling routes locally\, including provision of a safe cycle path to/from South Dartmoor Community College in Ashburton. \n \nThe route will be mainly on-road and there are a few hills\, making the ride suitable for cyclists who are confident beginners with some experience and reasonable fitness. These sessions have proved to be quite popular and have helped many in our local community as well as raising money for our local charities. Our number of helpers is quite small and we really need a few more to keep these sessions viable. Do you think you could help? You don’t need to be available for every session as we organise numbers around helpers available. You don’t need to be an absolute expert\, if you are competent with using a smart phone or laptop you will probably find that’s enough. We use Google to help us solve problems and we are a real hive mind supporting and learning from each other to help our attendees. We would really value some more people with knowledge of Apple products\, most of our helpers are more Android and Windows based at the moment. SUMMARY:Guided Bike Ride - Discover the Dartmoor Way
DESCRIPTION:Discover the Dartmoor Way: Join Sustainable South Brent\, PL21 Transition Town and Sustrans volunteers on a 50 mile/8 hour guided bike ride at an easy pace to discover the heart of Dartmoor. It is a circular route\, with a choice of 2 starts/finishes – either the Watermark Centre\, Ivybridge PL21 0SZ at 9.15am or the Old School Community Centre South Brent at 10.00am. We will follow the Dartmoor Way through Buckfastleigh-Holne-Hexworthy-Princetown-Burrator-Cornwood-Harford along scenic lanes with stunning views. From secret river valleys and ancient woodlands\, we cycle through little villages then climb up 5\,400ft onto the high moors passing ancient tors to find Dartmoor’s highest town. This ride is moderate to challenging in difficulty with some steep hills\, but we will cycle at an easy pace with rest breaks on route including for lunch. Don’t forget to bring your camera as there will be time to stop and take pictures too. Rides are open to anyone\, but you need to be reasonably fit and be prepared for changeable weather. E-bikes welcome but please bring your charger. Children age 12 years and over will be welcome but must be fit and accompanied by a parent. A back-up car will be provided. DESCRIPTION:(Good Friday): Enchantress Storytelling event with Stephanie Bradley (winner of SSB’s 10th Anniversary Artist’s Commission in 2016) from 7-10pm in the Beacon Room in the Old School Community Centre. If you want to be enchanted by story\, or you want to learn what our ancient British myths have to tell us today\, or you would like to share your own experience of enchantment this event is for you! Come and participate\, hear the stories and contribute your experience of the enchantress in your own life. These workshops are part of Steph’s MA research into the role of the Enchantress in healing the split between people and our eco system and is based on her study of indigenous British myths.
