DESCRIPTION:Saturday 14 February 2026: South Brent Seed Swap\, Free Tree Giveaway and Gardeners’ Social Cafe:  \nSouth Brent’s annual seed swap event from 10.30am-3pm in the HUB in the Old School Community Centre. All gardeners welcome\, from beginners to ‘old hands’. \nCome along\, bring\, swap\, share & discover new seeds to what promises to be an exciting day with something for everyone.  As well as an opportunity to swap seeds with fellow gardeners\, there will be a sale of three varieties of seed potato for your spring planting: Casablanca (organic) Charlotte (organic)\, and Kestrel. \n  \nYou can collect small brown envelopes in which to pack your seeds for swapping from a box just inside the door of The Hub (see right) \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThere will be also be: \n\na Gardeners’ Question Time session at 1pm – Always well supported and informative\, with local experts. Bring your questions.\na Soil Microscope: meet some of the tiny but miraculous soil creatures that help our crops to grow. DESCRIPTION:Thursday 6 November 2025: Talk on The Butterflies & Moths of South Brent by Phil Dean of the Devon Moth Group council in the Old School Community Centre at 7.30. \nThere are over 100\,000 records of butterflies and moths in South Brent dating from 1975 to the present day which reveal much about their success or decline\, their behaviour and their life cycles. “What’s the difference between butterflies and moths?  How can you help them in your garden?  What are their sizes\, colours\, lifecycles?  How many of the UK’s 2500+ species are found in South Brent?  Where’s the best place to look for them?  How can you set up a light source to attract moths at night?  How can you identify what you find?  What can you do with records of your sightings?”  This illustrated talk will answer these and many other questions.  In addition\, Phil will have moth traps to examine\, and a moth trap set up and working outside to see what might arrive on the night.  \n  \nThe first in a winter series of SSB Wildlife Talks\, with the next one being in early December.

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 28 May 2024: Avon Valley Project – Networking Event for Avon Valley Landowners and Land Managers: meeting in the main hall at the Old School Community Centre from 6.30-8.30pm.  \nDo join us if you are a land owner or land manager in the Upper Avon Valley and you are interested in conservation and one or more of the following – increasing the biodiversity of your land / creating nature corridors along the Avon Valley)/ hearing about what your neighbours are doing and what they have learnt on their experiences with their land / site visits on each other’s land / sharing information / volunteer days e.g. bat\, flower and bird surveys\, creating more water features / planting trees / celebrating the seasons / applying for grants to do more conservation work (e.g. fencing\, tree planting\, gates). \nIn this meeting we will share ideas on what we want to focus on and how we can make this happen. Together we can create a group that can support each other with ideas and perhaps help each other working together on our land. Your contribution can be as little or large as you choose.
