SUMMARY:Home Composting Masterclass with Nicky Scott
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 15 March 2025: Home Composting Masterclass from 1-4pm at the SSB’s new home compost demonstration site at the Marsh Compost Site (Exeter Road South Brent TQ10 9QF – adjacent to South West Water’s site). \nThis your chance to learn all you ever wanted to know about compost – and more! Sustainable South Hams ‘compost mentors’ ‘Dr Compost’\, *Nicky Scott and Mel Harvey will will guide you through different methods of home composting and the pros and cons of each. \nLearn about home composting methods such as ‘daleks’\, ‘green cones’\, ‘tumblers’\, ‘bokashi’\, ‘hot heaps’ and ‘biochar’. We’ll take a specific look at what to do with woody offcuts and learn about the power of biochar. \nBring a sample of your own home compost and Nicky will make suggestions for how to improve it. \n  \n  \nThe event runs over 3 hours as there is so much to learn! Please bring your own notepads\, cameras and ideally\, a pop-up chair\, plus lunch and snacks. There will be ample supplies of hot drinks. Although there is some shelter\, the event will be held outside\, so please dress accordingly. He’s been Chair of the Community Composting Network\, is the founder of Proper Job in Chagford and a regular contributor to compost forums around the world. Nicky has written many books about composting\, spoken at conferences here and abroad and runs innumerable compost workshops. Currently he is revising the third edition of ‘How to make and use Compost’ for Bloomsbury publications. Nicky has most recently worked with Sustainable South Hams to produce the booklet ‘Composting in the South Hams’.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday 23 March 2023: ‘Climate Fresk’ workshop with a soup supper from 6-9.30pm in the SSB HUB. \nWant to help tackle climate change but don’t have the time to become a climate scientist?  \nIn order to take action and find solutions\, we need to understand the problem. ‘Climate Fresk’ is a scientific\, collaborative and creative workshop to learn about climate change in a fun way. DESCRIPTION:To download a programme – CLICK HERE \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSSB is collaborating with South Brent Parish Council\, to run this really enjoyable\, free to enter\, day out. We’ve got over 50 stalls\,  with local community groups\, organisations and businesses\, loads of free or low-cost activities and workshops for all ages\, a table-top jumble sale\, great food and drink and some fabulous entertainment lined up. Plus competitions\, quizzes and a raffle with generous prizes. \nThe stalls and activities will focus positively on themes around community\, nature and climate. Also\, in keeping with this Jubilee year\, visitors will be able to explore the past\, present and future in a ‘Timescape’ marquee. \nThe Fair will be loosely zoned around the areas of:  Energy\, Nature\, Transport\, Community\, Renewal/Waste\, and Food & Land. As well as all the fun things happening across the Fair\,  there will be lots of really useful information. Visitors can find out how to reduce energy costs\, access grants\, get advice from a local GP\, talk to renewable energy experts and much more. DESCRIPTION:‘What’s my Carbon Footprint?’ Zoom workshop at 7.30pm. \nSustainable South Brent\, is looking to run monthly one hour workshops on Zoom\, organised by its Zero Carbon Group to help you establish your carbon footprint and think about ways to reduce it. The workshop is open to anyone who’s interested and no preparation is needed. To get the most from the workshop\, you’ll need to have basic Zoom and internet skills. (If successful\, we will look for ways to help non-techie people through the process too).
