DESCRIPTION:Saturday 14 February 2026: Free Tree Giveaway \nUnder the awning outside the Old School Community Centre from 10.30am-3pm\, or until the trees run out (Come early to avoid disappointment). \nRun by SSB’s Hedges and Woodland Group. We will be giving away up to five trees/shrubs per person\, together with guards and canes. First come\, first served\, until the stock runs out.  There will be a dozen species to choose from\, all wild and native to Britain.  The plants are one-year-old nursery seedlings (20-40cm tall)\, so they will need aftercare following planting. \nThe trees are grown from seed and provided by Devon Wildlife Trust as part of the wider Saving Devon’s Treescapes \nRunning alongside the Seed Swap (see https://ssb.org.uk/event/seed-swap-2/ ).

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 4 November 2025: Thermal Imaging Training: in the Hub at the Old School Community Centre \nSSB has two Thermal Imaging Cameras (TICs) for our members to use. DESCRIPTION:Tree planting at Hope Wood continues.  If you’d like to be involved\, please see the information below from ParkLife – the organisation contracted by South Hams District Council to arrange the tree planting sessions: \nJoin our Planting Days. Turn up on Friday or Saturday mornings from 10.00 onwards starting on Friday 31 January and Saturday 1 February. Please just turn up with wellies\, waterproofs\, spades\, lump hammer\, snacks and a warm drink. We’ll signpost the wood from Palstone Park Recreation Ground (where you need to leave any cars) if you haven’t been before. These planting days will run through until the end of March (unless we’ve planted it all by then). \nWith your help we’ll be doing two things by the 29 March: \n\nPlanting the rest of the trees and shrubs – a mix of native trees (such as alder\, aspen\, birch\, rowan\, cherry and willow) and a range of native shrubs (including hazel\, blackthorn\, elder\, hawthorn and spindle). These will be mixed between the oak circles that we planted on the 4th January.\nPutting wool mulch mats around the trees and shrubs to limit grass growth and give them the best chance of establishing well.

Due to the poor weather forecast from mid-afternoon onwards on Saturday 4th January\, the Community Tree Planting event has been scaled back to focus primarily on tree-planting.  \nWe’ll start the day with the unveiling of the woodland name at 10am before setting about planting as many trees as we can before the weather closes in at around 1pm. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 15 October and Tuesday 12 November 2024: ‘Thermal Imaging Training’ at 7.30-9pm in the Hub at the Old School Community Centre. \nWant to learn about heat loss from your home? SSB has two Thermal Imaging Cameras (TICs) for our members to use. The camera creates an image from infra-red heat emitted from an object\, so you can clearly “see” hotter or colder areas in your home. DESCRIPTION:Friday 19 January 2024: Swifts-in-South-Brent initiative: Meeting on the initiative to install nest boxes for Swifts in South Brent at 2pm in the Hub at the at the Old School Community Centre. \nHaving flown at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour\, on an amazing 3\,400-mile journey from Africa\, these beautiful birds arrive home in South Brent each Spring. However\, swift numbers are dwindling (down nationally 60% since 1995) partly due to loss of nesting sites. \nThere are exciting plans afoot (a-wing!?) to help our local Swift population.
