SUMMARY:Community Market Garden and Orchard Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:The Community Market Garden and Orchard project are planning Regular Volunteer Days\, twice a month\, following the successful orchard planting\, potato planting and tree guard installations. \nThese are on the Third Thursday of each month from 4pm to 7pm and the Last Saturday of each month from 10am to 3pm \nCome and visit the 10-acre site in its amazing setting. See what we’ve done so far and get to know the land by joining us to work there for an hour or two if you can. We’re growing potatoes again this year\, and garlic\, and are working on plans for a much broader range of vegetables and other crops in future years once legal formalities for the land are complete and we can begin fundraising. The project needs many different kinds of skills and interests. There’s lots to be done through the summer\, from weeding\, mulching and trimming to (we hope) harvesting. Or come and meet us just as an interested supporter as the project continues to develop. Bring snacks and drinks\, gloves and tools\, and wear stout waterproof footwear. \nSorry\, no dogs on the site please. Drop in for as long as you want! \nChildren and young people under the age of 18 to be accompanied by a responsible adult please \nFFI email marketgarden@ssb.org.uk \n(What3Words location: river.squirts.grazed) \nTo find out more about Community Market Garden and Orchard the see the project page: https://ssb.org.uk/projects/market-garden-orchard/ \n

SUMMARY:Partial Solar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 12 August 2026: Partial solar eclipse (well it’s both a local and very distant event!) \nPartial solar eclipse: as the sun begins to set see the eclipse as the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun\, resulting in 91% coverage of the sun by the moon’s shadow – making it the most significant eclipse since the total eclipse of 1999. \nDevon\, is set to be one of the best places in the UK to view the phenomenon\, which will begin with “first contact” at 6.18pm as the Moon starts its transit. The eclipse will peak at 7.16pm\, plunging the sky into near-total darkness\, before returning to normal at around 8.10pm. As the eclipse reaches its peak\, you may notice the light becoming softer\, temperatures dropping slightly and the landscape taking on an eerie glow. Birds often become quieter\, and some flowers even begin to close\, thinking night has arrived. \nThe Met Office forecasts excellent viewing conditions\, predicting clear skies and warm afternoon temperatures reaching up to 28°C across parts of the county. \nThe Perseid meteor shower is also close to its peak this week\, so once darkness falls\, keep looking up; you may be treated to shooting stars too. \nNB. You can order Solar eclipse glasses from The Village shop £2 a pair; see: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=1765231628393814 \n(This is not an SSB organised event!!)

SUMMARY:Community Market Garden - Orchard Watering Party
DESCRIPTION:Today’s working party will be a watering party from 4 to 7pm\, as the orchard trees are need of a long drink. We have had containers of water delivered to the field\, plus there is a large tank by the railway embankment.  For anyone not away on holiday and willing to spend a couple of hours on the market garden field\, we need people to fill and carry watering cans\,  to use one full can to water each tree.  We have watered quite a few already\, and those have yellow ribbons tied to the tree guards.  There are several cans on site. \n\nThere is also garlic to harvest – it’s quite well hidden so it counts as a treasure hunt!\nCutting the seed heads off thistles and bagging them is another task.\n\nBring sun protection\, drinks and gardening gloves. \nThis is one of our twice monthly Volunteer Days in the Community Market Garden and Orchard project on the Third Thursday of each month from 4pm to 7pm and the Last Saturday of each month from 10am to 3pm\,  \nVisit the 10-acre site in its amazing setting. See what we’ve done so far and get to know the land by joining us to work there for an hour or two if you can. \nWe’re growing potatoes again this year\, and garlic\, and are working on plans for a much broader range of vegetables and other crops in future years once legal formalities for the land are complete and we can begin fundraising. The project needs many different kinds of skills and interests. There’s lots to be done through the summer\, from weeding\, mulching and trimming to (we hope) harvesting. Or come and meet us just as an interested supporter as the project continues to develop. \nBring snacks and drinks\, gloves and tools\, and wear stout waterproof footwear. Sorry\, no dogs on the site please.

SUMMARY:Community Market Garden and Orchard Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:We hope to see some of you on the market garden field for another day of tree maintenance and some thistle chopping. Please bring gardening gloves\, drinks and snacks.  Maybe rainwear\, maybe sunhats! Who knows? \nWe plan to take the tree guards off\, weed and re-mulch each tree\, then replace the guards. \nThe Orchard Link group is planning an event in October for people who want to plant an orchard\, and will be using our orchard as an exemplar so we want our trees to look smart!  A general site tidy up would be in order as well. \nThere might be sheep grazing within a fenced area on the orchard so we must work around them. \n  \nThe Community Market Garden and Orchard project are planning Regular Volunteer Days\, twice a month\, following the successful orchard planting\, potato planting and tree guard installations.
