SUMMARY:Learn to scythe
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 4 September 2021: Learn to scythe – 10am – 12noon. Jeremy Sabel of SSB’s ‘4Bs’ says: “I hope you have been enjoying the wildflowers once again in the village. The eagle-eyed among you may have noticed that the Apple a Day Orchard at the Doctor’s Surgery has now been scythed but we want to give an opportunity to you all to try scything for yourself. \nPlease come along at 10am to the wildflower verge outside the play park to try scything for yourself. You can also help in other ways such as raking up the grasses and loading into dumpy bags. Please bring your own rakes and dumpy bags if you have them. We will transport the grasses/wildflowers to the Marsh Composting Site. Please let me know if you intend coming on the day so I get an idea of numbers. If you need to find us on the day call: 07950 376368. \n\nPlease do not bring dogs. Children are welcome to watch but cannot participate.\nAll participants must stay at least 1m from each other at all times. A risk assessment has been conducted and we will run through this on the day\nIn the event of foul weather the event will be postponed.”\n\nFFI contact beesbugs@ssb.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Active Hope Course (October - December 2021)
DESCRIPTION:Active Hope Course; Thursday evenings; 5.30-8.30pm: Dates:7 & 21 October; 4 & 18 November; 2 & 9 December. – Would you like to make a positive difference for future generations so life on our planet\, but feel overwhelmed\, burned-out\, paralysed or numbed by the enormity of the challenges? This course is for people wanting to influence change to make a positive difference for future generations. We are in a climate and environmental crisis; the recent IPCC report states that we are on code red – climate change is real\, present and lasting\, with effects almost certain to worsen through the coming decades. This all sounds so alarming. There is an urgency to act! ………yet action without reflection\, calmness and clear thinking can be wasteful and burn you and others up. These workshops are a safe place to be with our feelings\, helping us to stay grounded\, connected and responsive to what’s happening in our lives\, our communities and our world. The course will be on-line via Zoom. It is highly interactive\, and is based on the work of Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone\, to address the urgent crisis we face – “Exploring how to face the mess we’re in without going crazy”. The group will be facilitated by Jeannie Hodder\, Leadership Coach and Facilitator. Payment is on a donation basis (offerings at the end of the course). Participants are expected to commit to the whole course and spaces are limited (max. 12 places) so booking is essential. To make a booking or for more information\, please contact: Jeannie via coaching@jhodder.co.uk and please include a few sentences about why you want to join and what you hope to achieve from joining the group. SSB’s first ‘EcoPubHub’ to kick off the New Year has been organised by the ‘Talking Rubbish’ group and is a Zoom session to explore how changes in our every-day lives can make a big difference to our carbon footprint. Among the line-up of inspirational speakers are: \n\nZac Goodall\, one of the employee co-owners at Riverford\, one of the largest local food producers\, where he works on sustainability projects such as developing the company’s modern slavery policy and working on a carbon footprint project with Exeter University. Zac will talk to us about their packaging journey and future plans to reduce the impact that food packaging has on our environment. He also has an MSc in Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture.\nSarah Allen – zero-waste blogger\, who will talk about\, about her personal journey in getting as close to zero waste as possible. As well as a blog called ‘Rhubarb and Runner Beans’ and Facebook page\, Sarah has written an eBook – ‘52 Tips to Reduce Waste: Save money\, Lower your carbon footprint\, consume less and be happier’ – one practical tip for every week of the year!\n[Jacqui Winterburn from Suez\, which manages the Ivybridge waste and recycling centre\, will give us an insight into the management of all that stuff we throw away. She will also give us advice and guidance on what we can do as individuals and as a community to waste less and reuse more.]\nJacqui Winterburn is unable to attend and Bobby Hughes\, Senior Waste Management Officer at Devon County Council\, is kindly taking her place at short notice.\n\n \nJoin us! – Find out more and share your own experience \nRegister via eventbrite: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/talking-rubbish-at-the-ecopubhub-registration-169360019377 \nor scan the QR code
