DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 1 July 20206: Seed Swap extra! – Seed Saving – Free talk: in the Methodist Church School Room at 7pm \nOur speaker is Robyn Minogue\, who is a grower at School Farm\, Dartington\, the celebrated local organic market garden. Robyn is part of the Gaia Foundation’s Seed Sovereignty Programme and has specialist experience of seed growing\, working freelance across the agroecological sector to promote regenerative food systems. \nSouth Brent Seed Swap has been put to bed for another year\, but we’re now looking forward to future events (our fifth Seed Swap will be in February 2027) and thinking how we can get even more people involved in growing and saving their own seeds\, both for their own use and swap with others. DESCRIPTION:Sunday 5 July 2026: The People’s Emergency Briefing’ \nin the Village Hall from 5-7pm. \nScreening of an eye-opening\, ground-breaking\, must-see\, film featuring Chris Packham and ten leading UK scientists and experts\, presenting clear\, evidence-based insights on the growing risks to our weather\, food\, health and cost of living. It reveals the stark reality of the threats posed to humanity by the climate and biodiversity crises – and the ways we can all respond to them. \nThe 50-minute film will be followed by an optional\, facilitated\, open discussion – a chance to voice how we think and feel about it all. The first step in an urgent\, large-scale campaign to build an irresistible call for a national televised briefing\, so every household hears the same evidence. \nBackground: Last November in Westminster\, ten of the UK’s leading experts briefed an invited audience of over 1\,200 politicians and leaders from business\, culture\, faith\, sport and the media. SUMMARY:Yellow Rattle Harvesting in Hope Wood
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 8 July 2026: Yellow Rattle Harvesting in Hope Wood from 10.30am – 3pm. \nYellow Rattle is a semi-parasitic plant which helps to weaken dominant grass growth to create more favourable conditions for native wildflowers. It is known as “The Meadow Maker”. Yellow Rattle was sown in the top field of the Hope Wood site last year with spectacular results this summer. It has now set seed\, some of which will stay to continue its work next year\, but we can also harvest it to help create new meadows elsewhere in Devon. \n  \nParkLife and Moor Meadows would like to invite you to take part in this satisfying activity for all or part of the day. \nYou will receive full instructions on what to do. We will be collecting the seeds by hand\, and you are welcome to take some to create your own meadow\, of whatever size. Bring a bucket or canvas bag in which to collect the seeds. \nPlease walk or cycle to Hope Wood\, following the ParkLife signs from the Recreation Ground. The entrance to the meadow is on the north side of Portford Lane. \n Please keep dogs on a lead. DESCRIPTION:Thursday 30 July 2026:  Volunteer Day in Hope Wood Meadow: from 10.30am -2.30pm. \n \n\nParkLife have announced a change of plan for volunteers\, following confirmation by ‘Cows in Clover‘ that their Dexter Cattle will not eat the ragwort\, it can be left for the moths (esp cinnabar moths (see picture)) and pollinators.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJobs for this day will now be:\n\nwatercourse maintenance – checking the stream for obstructions and\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHimalayan Balsam removal\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nand harvesting more Yellow Rattle seeds.\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nHope Wood isn’t just a woodland creation project; it’s an ambitious nature recovery scheme including a meadow of species-rich grassland. \nThe Dexter Cattle will graze the meadow later this summer\, helping to create a welcoming seed-bed for the native wildflowers due to be sown there next year. \nTools will be provided; Please bring gardening gloves and wear outdoor clothing and shoes \nPlease walk or cycle (no cars please) to Hope Wood\, following the ParkLife signs from the Recreation Ground to the entrance on the north side of Portford Lane. \nFFI contact: office@parklife.org.uk.  \nFFI about Hope Wood\, see: https://ssb.org.uk/hope-wood/.

DESCRIPTION:Friday 7 August 2026: ‘Moth Watch at The Luces’: \nPhil Dean\, of the Devon Moth Group council\, and author of ‘The Moths of South Brent Parish’ (updated 2026 and available for non commercial download here)\, and Mike Goss of Brent Birders\, will bring their moth traps to ‘The Luces’ wildlife garden\, just off Hillside. \nCome from 8.30-10.30pm. Greater numbers are likely as night falls. \nThe Moths will be put in glass jars to look at close up for a short time\, before being released. \nBring your own chair if needed and refreshments and a torch for safety. \nIt will be amazing! We are so lucky to have this expertise on our doorstep. This event is weather dependent and will be postponed if wet.
