Please dress for Dartmoor and bring gloves\, drinks and lunch. \nMervyn is also organising volunteer days to pull up Himalayan balsam in The West Dart Headwaters and the Wray Brook at Lustleigh. \nThis is not an SSB event\, but SSB supports the DNPA Invasive Species Project

SUMMARY:Mini-BioBlitz at the ‘Apple a Day' Orchard
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 1 July 2023: Mini-BioBlitz from 10am – 1pm at the ‘Apple a day Orchard’ behind the Health Centre\, Plymouth Rd. So … come and see the wildlife in the Apple a Day Orchard at the South Brent Health Centre. This will highlight the natural beauty and increasing biodiversity of the wildflower patch and orchard\, created by Sustainable South Brent’s ‘4Bs’ group (Brent Bees Bugs & Butterflies) and the community in 2019. The record we create will also serve as a new baseline to compare future surveys. Suitable for all ages … we’ll have more info on accessibility shortly. There is a car park at the Health Centre. Equipment provided – please BYO refreshments. All are welcome\, but no dogs or other pets\, please. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. Feel free to bring ID guides\, notebooks\, 1m quadrats\, hand lenses\, swoop nets etc if you have any – best to label them with your name. If the weather is extreme in any way\, we will use the Hub as a base. If you have good knowledge of local species\, especially grassland plants and insects\, and would like to volunteer as an expert\, please get in touch. It would be great to know if you will be joining us\, so please do let us know if you will be coming. \nAny questions to beesbugs@ssb.org.uk.

SUMMARY:‘The Lost Rainforests of Britain’ – talk by Guy Shrubsole
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 13 June 2023 (rescheduled from Tuesday 25 April): ‘The Lost Rainforests of Britain’ – Talk\, Q&A and book signing by Guy Shrubsole at 7:30pm in South Brent Village Hall. \nIn 2020\, writer\, campaigner and blogger (‘Who Owns England?’)\, Guy Shrubsole moved from London to Devon. As he explored the wooded valleys\, rivers and tors of Dartmoor\, Guy discovered a spectacular habitat that he had never encountered before: temperate rainforest. Entranced\, he would spend the coming months investigating the history\, ecology and distribution of rainforests across England\, Wales and Scotland. \nBritain\, Guy discovered\, was once a rainforest nation and he embarked on an awe-inspiring journey through the Atlantic oakwoods and hazelwoods of the Western Highlands and the Lake District\, down to the rainforests of Wales\, Devon and Cornwall\, mapping these under-recognised ecosystems in exquisite detail and revealing their hidden histories\, natural wonders and cultural inspiration. \nNot only a mesmerising chronicle but an inspiring intervention to help protect and restore these environments before they are lost from the landscape\, and our collective memory\, forever. \nThis talk will be based on Guy’s award-winning book ‘The Lost Rainforests of Britain‘. Expected running time for the event is approximately 1 hour\, including a Q&A session and plenty of time to buy and have books signed afterwards. \nIvybridge independent bookshop will be selling books on the night. Tickets are limited and are available on a first come\, first served\, basis at £8/£10 (pay what you feel is right) from the HUB or artworks or via www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/new-date-for-guy-shrubsole-talk-the-lost-rainforests-of-britain-tickets-632261179207.

SUMMARY:‘Endangered Species of Devon’ - Embroidery exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Monday 15-Sunday 28 May 2023: ‘Endangered Species of Devon’ – South Devon Stitchers Embroidery exhibition in the Hub at the Old School Community Centre open Monday-Friday 9.30-12.30 or by appointment. \nFollowing on from the great reception of the Loving Earth exhibition\, SSB is thrilled to be displaying work by South Devon Stitchers\, formerly an embroiderers guild branch but during covid became and independent group.  There are about 20 stitchers\, of all ages and abilities\, with a wide range of textile skills and experience. \nThis was a community project begun during lockdown\, with 3 panels that depict endangered species of South Devon. \nThe panels were on display in Torre Abbey last summer\, and again at Westpoint ‘Craft 4 Crafters’ in March this year with the whole idea being to raise awareness about our endangered species and for people to see the panels and learn about the local flora and fauna.

SUMMARY:National Emergency Alerts Alarm system test
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 23 April 2023: National Alarm Test at 3pm. The Government plans to test the National Emergency Alerts Alarm system by sending a national test alarm – a siren and vibration\, lasting for up to 10 seconds\, to all smartphones that use 4G and 5G phone networks (older\, ‘non-smart’ phones will not receive the alarm). The system is now live\, enabling people to be contacted through their mobile phone in the event of there being a danger to life near to where they are (current location – not where you live or work)\, for example severe flooding or fire in the area. If that were to happen near you\, your mobile phone or tablet will receive an alert with advice about how to stay safe. The emergency alert will appear on your device’s home screen and you will need to acknowledge it before you can use other features on the phone. It will however just be a test\, so other than to acknowledge it\, you do not need to take any further action. FFI see: www.gov.uk/alerts and YouTube video and FAQs at https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1143765/Frequently_asked_questions_about_Emergency_Alerts.pdf.
