SUMMARY:Gaynor Williams: Exhibition and Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 24 September – Saturday 7 October 2023: Gaynor Williams: Exhibition and Book Launch: Textile animal trappings of India and Central Asia: A flowering in Arid Lands in Birdwood House\, 44 Hight Street\, Totnes\, TQ9 5SG. 10.30am-4.30pm daily except 2-4pm Sundays. \nSouth Brent’s Gaynor Williams is exhibiting (and offering for sale) some of her historic textile animal trappings collection and launching her book “Textile animal trappings of India and Central Asia: A flowering in Arid Lands: My collection”. The textiles\, whether woven\, embroidered\, felted or braided\, are highly decorative\, sometimes functional\, and despite removal from their original context\, remain mesmeric and pose many questions. The making of these bespoke pieces (mainly early-mid 20C) is evidence of the alliance between nomadic and pastoralist peoples and their working animals. The voices that emerges peak of the people’s resourcefulness and the endurance of their animals. This lifestyle is all-but lost and these wonders are no longer made. \nFree Entry. See: https://gaynorwilliams.com/. \nSunday 1 October at 2pm – Gaynor will give an Illustrated talk – all welcome. \n[NB. This is not an SSB event.]

SUMMARY:Mini-BioBlitz at the ‘Apple a Day' Orchard
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 1 July 2023: Mini-BioBlitz from 10am – 1pm at the ‘Apple a day Orchard’ behind the Health Centre\, Plymouth Rd. SUMMARY:‘The Lost Rainforests of Britain’ – talk by Guy Shrubsole
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 13 June 2023 (rescheduled from Tuesday 25 April): ‘The Lost Rainforests of Britain’ – Talk\, Q&A and book signing by Guy Shrubsole at 7:30pm in South Brent Village Hall. \nIn 2020\, writer\, campaigner and blogger (‘Who Owns England?’)\, Guy Shrubsole moved from London to Devon. As he explored the wooded valleys\, rivers and tors of Dartmoor\, Guy discovered a spectacular habitat that he had never encountered before: temperate rainforest. Entranced\, he would spend the coming months investigating the history\, ecology and distribution of rainforests across England\, Wales and Scotland. \nBritain\, Guy discovered\, was once a rainforest nation and he embarked on an awe-inspiring journey through the Atlantic oakwoods and hazelwoods of the Western Highlands and the Lake District\, down to the rainforests of Wales\, Devon and Cornwall\, mapping these under-recognised ecosystems in exquisite detail and revealing their hidden histories\, natural wonders and cultural inspiration. \nNot only a mesmerising chronicle but an inspiring intervention to help protect and restore these environments before they are lost from the landscape\, and our collective memory\, forever. \nThis talk will be based on Guy’s award-winning book ‘The Lost Rainforests of Britain‘. Expected running time for the event is approximately 1 hour\, including a Q&A session and plenty of time to buy and have books signed afterwards. \nIvybridge independent bookshop will be selling books on the night. Tickets are limited and are available on a first come\, first served\, basis at £8/£10 (pay what you feel is right) from the HUB or artworks or via www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/new-date-for-guy-shrubsole-talk-the-lost-rainforests-of-britain-tickets-632261179207.

SUMMARY:‘Endangered Species of Devon’ - Embroidery exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Monday 15-Sunday 28 May 2023: ‘Endangered Species of Devon’ – South Devon Stitchers Embroidery exhibition in the Hub at the Old School Community Centre open Monday-Friday 9.30-12.30 or by appointment. \nFollowing on from the great reception of the Loving Earth exhibition\, SSB is thrilled to be displaying work by South Devon Stitchers\, formerly an embroiderers guild branch but during covid became and independent group.  There are about 20 stitchers\, of all ages and abilities\, with a wide range of textile skills and experience. \nThis was a community project begun during lockdown\, with 3 panels that depict endangered species of South Devon. \nThe panels were on display in Torre Abbey last summer\, and again at Westpoint ‘Craft 4 Crafters’ in March this year with the whole idea being to raise awareness about our endangered species and for people to see the panels and learn about the local flora and fauna.
