Mulled drinks available. \nCLICK HERE for a song sheet \n‘Apple’ or ‘Orchard’ Wassailing is a revived\, ancient tradition performed in many villages around ‘Old Twelfth Night’ to bless the cider apples and orchards and encourage a good crop in the coming year (for more info on Wassailing see: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/discover/history/art-collections/wassailing-ritual-and-revelry). \nBooking only – limited tickets at £6\, £3\, £0. SUMMARY:Swifts-in-South-Brent initiative meeting
DESCRIPTION:Friday 19 January 2024: Swifts-in-South-Brent initiative: Meeting on the initiative to install nest boxes for Swifts in South Brent at 2pm in the Hub at the at the Old School Community Centre. \nHaving flown at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour\, on an amazing 3\,400-mile journey from Africa\, these beautiful birds arrive home in South Brent each Spring. However\, swift numbers are dwindling (down nationally 60% since 1995) partly due to loss of nesting sites. \nThere are exciting plans afoot (a-wing!?) to help our local Swift population. SSB volunteers and Young Adult Ambassadors\, working alongside: Brent Birders; Devon Birds’ nest-boxes in churches initiatives; Dawlish Swifts and others\, are working on an initiative to improve the situation\, seeking available local knowledge\, identifying sites\, adding them to the RSPB’s Swift Mapper\, building nest boxes (Dartside Explorer Scouts); distributing boxes to approved sites\, installing boxes and spreading the word. \n– If you would like to attend this meeting\, please email Hayden on yaa@ssb.org.uk\, so that you are expected. \nIf you know of any current\, abandoned or potential Swift nesting sites\, or would like to see a Swift nest box on your house or outbuilding please email Hayden on yaa@ssb.org.uk. FFI see: https://ssb.org.uk/helping-our-swifts-to-soar/. \nThere will be a related talk by TV naturalist\, ecologist\, artist and speaker\, John Walters in the Village Hall on 14 March

SUMMARY:Living Well; Falling Apart
DESCRIPTION:How do I live well\, when it feels like the world is falling apart? \nAn online evening from 7.30 to 9.30pm. \nTime to slow down\, to reflect\, to share and explore\, and to be with the discomfort – amongst others. Anxious or hopeful? Despairing or determined? Confused or curious? Local\, National or Global? Legal or illegal? External or internal change? Inspired or burnt out? Action or rest? Nowhere to get to and no need to make choices or action plans. Just a chance to speak\, listen\, consider. To be with others and feel connected with a wider community. All welcome. This event was inspired by feelings and anxieties about the climate and environment. However\, we’ve come to realise it’s probably equally relevant to other challenging world events. \nThis event is not an SSB event\, but has been organised by a small group in Devon involved in local sustainability projects\, climate and environmental issues. Click here to register. Any questions – email discussions@itsorted.org.uk.

DESCRIPTION:Sunday 24 September – Saturday 7 October 2023: Gaynor Williams: Exhibition and Book Launch: Textile animal trappings of India and Central Asia: A flowering in Arid Lands in Birdwood House\, 44 Hight Street\, Totnes\, TQ9 5SG. 10.30am-4.30pm daily except 2-4pm Sundays. \nSouth Brent’s Gaynor Williams is exhibiting (and offering for sale) some of her historic textile animal trappings collection and launching her book “Textile animal trappings of India and Central Asia: A flowering in Arid Lands: My collection”.
