SUMMARY:Partial Solar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 12 August 2026: Partial solar eclipse (well it’s both a local and very distant event!) \nPartial solar eclipse: as the sun begins to set see the eclipse as the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun\, resulting in 91% coverage of the sun by the moon’s shadow – making it the most significant eclipse since the total eclipse of 1999. \nDevon\, is set to be one of the best places in the UK to view the phenomenon\, which will begin with “first contact” at 6.18pm as the Moon starts its transit. The eclipse will peak at 7.16pm\, plunging the sky into near-total darkness\, before returning to normal at around 8.10pm. As the eclipse reaches its peak\, you may notice the light becoming softer\, temperatures dropping slightly and the landscape taking on an eerie glow. Birds often become quieter\, and some flowers even begin to close\, thinking night has arrived. \nThe Met Office forecasts excellent viewing conditions\, predicting clear skies and warm afternoon temperatures reaching up to 28°C across parts of the county. \nThe Perseid meteor shower is also close to its peak this week\, so once darkness falls\, keep looking up; you may be treated to shooting stars too. \nNB. You can order Solar eclipse glasses from The Village shop £2 a pair; see: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=1765231628393814 \n(This is not an SSB organised event!!)

SUMMARY:Seed Swap Packing Chat

SUMMARY:People’s Emergency Briefing film
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 27 September 2026: ‘The People’s Emergency Briefing’ in the Village Hall from 5-7pm. \n \nAnother screening of an eye-opening\, must see\, film featuring Chris Packham and ten leading UK scientists and experts presenting clear\, evidence-based insights on the growing risks to our weather\, food\, health and cost of living. \nWhen last shown in South Brent in July it was a sell-out. If you missed it – or want to see it again – here is your opportunity. \nThe 50-minute film will be followed by an optional\, facilitated\, open discussion – a chance to voice how we think and feel about it all. The first step in an urgent\, large-scale campaign to build an irresistible call for a national televised briefing\, so every household hears the same evidence. \nBackground: Last November in Westminster\, ten of the UK’s leading experts briefed an invited audience of over 1\,200 politicians and leaders from business\, culture\, faith\, sport and the media. The event was covered by ITV\, C4\, and the Times. It set out the implications of changing climate and nature breakdown for health\, food systems\, national security and the economy. Our MP Caroline Voaden and South Hams District Council both fully support this campaign. \n  \nFor age 16 or over only. You can watch a 1 min YouTube trailer at https://youtu.be/9tLUnWHkGG4.
