SUMMARY:Tree Care in Hope Wood
DESCRIPTION:Fridays 17 & 24 April; 1 & 8 May 2026: Tree Care in Hope Wood from 10:30am-3pm.\n\n\n\n\nYOU THOUGHT IT WAS ALL OVER!\n\nWe did indeed plant all 12\,500 trees before Easter Sunday\, but around 2000 of them don’t yet have their woollen mulch mats to protect them from competing grass growth. ParkLife SW will be on site\, from 10.30am to 3.00pm (join anytime) to make a start and would be very grateful for your help.\n\n\nWear wellies! Tools provided but bring a mallet/lump hammer if you have one. \,\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nFind us north of Portford Lane (What3Words: deodorant.chainsaw.dads)\, a few minutes’ walk from Palstone Park Recreation Ground (where you need to leave any cars as there is no parking available on site). Follow signs to site. See https://ssb.org.uk/hope-wood/ and ParkLife – the organisation contracted by South Hams District Council to arrange the tree care sessions.

SUMMARY:More Fruit Tree Care - Fitting Tree Guards in the new Community Orchard
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 3 May 2026: Call for volunteers to help fit the remaining Tree Guards in the new Community Orchard: \nAfter the Thursday session of mulching the fruit trees and planting the rest of the potatoes\, and taking advantage of the continuing good weather\, this Sunday session will be for fitting the remaining tree guards. \nPlease bring a hammer and perhaps wire-cutters for fitting tree guards. Gloves would be useful\, and wellies are essential because of the muddy\, flooded gateway which we are doing our best to get resolved. And do bring drinks and snacks. \n  \nPlease join us\, and come and see the young fruit trees emerging into spring and producing their first blossom – exciting! \nWe hope to see you there. \nAnd if you can’t make these dates\, but would like to join the growing band of people who want to be involved in the market garden and orchard – either as a volunteer (we need many different kinds of skills and interests)\, or just as an interested supporter of this exciting new community project as it develops on site\, please email us at: marketgarden@ssb.org.uk \nAccess to the Market Garden field site – on foot or by bike\, but absolutely no cars – is along Palstone Lane then left down Portford Lane to a signposted entrance on the left – What3Words: extend.showed.spreading. If you are interested in helping on this day or for further information\, please email marketgarden@ssb.org.uk; \nFor more information on the Community Market Garden and Orchard project\, email marketgarden@ssb.org.uk and visit https://ssb.org.uk/projects/market-garden-orchard/

SUMMARY:Seed Swap extra! - Free Seed Saving Talk
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 1 July 20206: Seed Swap extra! – Seed Saving – Free talk: in the Methodist Church School Room at 7pm \nOur speaker is Robyn Minogue\, who is a grower at School Farm\, Dartington\, the celebrated local organic market garden. Robyn is part of the Gaia Foundation’s Seed Sovereignty Programme and has specialist experience of seed growing\, working freelance across the agroecological sector to promote regenerative food systems. \nSouth Brent Seed Swap has been put to bed for another year\, but we’re now looking forward to future events (our fifth Seed Swap will be in February 2027) and thinking how we can get even more people involved in growing and saving their own seeds\, both for their own use and swap with others. Successful seed saving is a satisfying and important step towards a more resilient food economy – and can save money too! \nDo take the opportunity to join us\, to learn tips and tricks and find out all you need to know about successful seed saving. Organised by the Seed Saving Collective; \n  \n  \nFFI contact Carol – halfmoonfield@planetmail.com or call 0790 066 6094.

SUMMARY:South Brent Screening of "The People's Emergency Briefing"
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 5 July 2026: The People’s Emergency Briefing’ \nin the Village Hall from 5-7pm. \nScreening of an eye-opening\, ground-breaking\, must-see\, film featuring Chris Packham and ten leading UK scientists and experts\, presenting clear\, evidence-based insights on the growing risks to our weather\, food\, health and cost of living. It reveals the stark reality of the threats posed to humanity by the climate and biodiversity crises – and the ways we can all respond to them. \nThe 50-minute film will be followed by an optional\, facilitated\, open discussion – a chance to voice how we think and feel about it all. The first step in an urgent\, large-scale campaign to build an irresistible call for a national televised briefing\, so every household hears the same evidence. \nBackground: Last November in Westminster\, ten of the UK’s leading experts briefed an invited audience of over 1\,200 politicians and leaders from business\, culture\, faith\, sport and the media. The event was covered by ITV\, C4\, and the Times. It set out the implications of changing climate and nature breakdown for health\, food systems\, national security and the economy. \n  \nOur MP Caroline Voaden and South Hams District Council both fully support this campaign. \nYou can watch a 1 min YouTube trailer at https://youtu.be/9tLUnWHkGG4. \n \n“This film isn’t designed to sow fear. It’s about hope. It’s about knowledge as power. The opportunity for grown-up conversations. So our political leaders can no longer pretend it’s business as usual\, bow to industry lobbyists and kick the can on decisions that affect our very survival through this decade and beyond.” – Sarah Daly. \nFor age 16 or over only. \n  \n  \n  \nSee: https://www.nebriefing.org/ and FFI email neb@itsorted.org.uk\, \nTo book a free seat go to www.itsorted.org.uk/neb/ or scan the QR code \n  \n  \n(NB. SUMMARY:Yellow Rattle Harvesting in Hope Wood
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 8 July 2026: Yellow Rattle Harvesting in Hope Wood from 10.30am – 3pm. \nYellow Rattle is a semi-parasitic plant which helps to weaken dominant grass growth to create more favourable conditions for native wildflowers. It is known as “The Meadow Maker”. Yellow Rattle was sown in the top field of the Hope Wood site last year with spectacular results this summer. It has now set seed\, some of which will stay to continue its work next year\, but we can also harvest it to help create new meadows elsewhere in Devon. \n  \nParkLife and Moor Meadows would like to invite you to take part in this satisfying activity for all or part of the day. \nYou will receive full instructions on what to do. We will be collecting the seeds by hand\, and you are welcome to take some to create your own meadow\, of whatever size. Bring a bucket or canvas bag in which to collect the seeds. \nPlease walk or cycle to Hope Wood\, following the ParkLife signs from the Recreation Ground. The entrance to the meadow is on the north side of Portford Lane. \n Please keep dogs on a lead. Small children are welcome if closely supervised. \nNo cars allowed. \nFFI contact: office@parklife.org.uk.   \n  \nFor more information about Hope Wood click here
