SUMMARY:FRANK NOBLE - Village drive through
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 13 August 2020: Frank Noble – Village Drive Through: Many of you will have heard that Frank Noble\, passed away peacefully on 22 July aged 80. Frank was an important and valued part of many facets of South Brent life. He was an enthusiastic member of Sustainable South Brent since its inception in 2006\, contributing as a volunteer at the Marsh composting site and working with the children at the School Garden. He was hugely knowledgeable about folk music and Dartmoor traditions\, and in addition to playing accordion in various folk settings\, led the Carnival Floral Dance with Ruth for many years\, and taught generations of children the ‘Dartmoor Broom Dance’. He was the South Brent Community Champion for 2018-19\, and had himself served as a Parish Councillor. Not to mention his working life as a vet! \nDue to the current coronavirus circumstances\, not everyone who would like to\, can attend his funeral in person. To keep everyone safe and comply with current guidance\, the ceremony will have limited numbers with attendance by direct invitation. However\, aware that Frank was very much appreciated and loved by friends\, family and the community\, his family\, working with Heart and Soul Funerals are trying to make it possible for people to have an opportunity to say goodbye\, and so the following arrangements have been made: \n\n\n\nDrive Through the Village of South Brent from the Old School Community Centre to South Brent Primary School\, Totnes Road between 1250 and 1305: The Heart & Soul car carrying Frank will pass through the village on the way to the burial site at Bidwell Woodland\, Rattery. It will arrive at the Old School Community Centre car park at 1250 and will leave from outside the Primary School on Totnes Road at 1305. The car is not a hearse\, but will be marked with a green ribbon. It will stop at both points and move slowly between them. It has tinted windows\, but the back door will be opened.\nAttending the Funeral via Zoom from 2pm: Click on the following link and follow the instructions https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86967470451?pwd=S0hiUVMyRlVWemI3Q0g0VTJsQlB0Zz09; or if you use the Zoom App\, access via: Meeting ID: 869 6747 0451; Passcode: 493652\n\n\n\nThe link will be open from 1pm to give you time to arrive\, overcome any technicalities and feel settled. If you haven’t used Zoom before it is worth going to their website https://zoom.us/ signing in (it’s free)\, and have a look at some of the Zoom basic help pages\, such as ‘How to join a meeting’. Please let Heart and Soul know in advance by email (admin@heartandsoulfunerals.co.uk) if you will be joining by Zoom. \n\n\n\nFilming of ceremony to watch at a later date:Heart & Soul are also filming the ceremony at the Woodland Burial\, so it can be watched later.\n\n\n\nDonations: If you would like to make a donation in Frank’s memory this can be done through Heart and Soul to the Farms for City Children charity of which Frank was an enthusiastic supporter www.farmsforcitychildren.org You can make a donation by going to https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/heart-and-soul-funerals-franknoble. SUMMARY:Strawbale Barn Building Course
DESCRIPTION:NB: We are looking for volunteers please.on the morning of Wednesday 22 July for stacking 500 bales of straw for the strawbale barn build. The farm where the straw will be stored is at Halwell near Harbertonford. We can share lifts from Totnes or South Brent. Lunch and drinks and fuel costs paid. Please contact Jane on 07539881884 and spread the word. Thank You. \nMonday 17 – Friday 28 August 2020 (Subject to C-19 situation): Strawbale Barn Building Course. A Free 10 day course at Diptford. We are barn building! A straw and wooden one which will not be blown down by wind or wolves. We are enlisting the help of Phil from Huff and Puff Construction to be our teacher for this 10 day course and are looking for 10 learners who can commit to all 10 days. This is practical learning on a construction site and you will need to be physically able. The course is free\, but there will be an interview process and you will need to provide a £100 deposit which will be refunded in full after the course. “Straw – and reeds and other similar materials – have been used in buildings and shelters the world over for as long as we’ve existed. Like trees\, straw captures carbon when it grows. Unlike trees\, straw grows every year. Lock that straw up in a building for 200 plus years and we’re making a massive contribution to carbon capture – with no massively complicated technology required. There are details to learn\, like any other craft\, but it’s inherently simple. Everyone can have a go without breaking the bank. Get natural\, get local\, get your hands dirty and let’s do it for ourselves!” We expect this offer to be popular but will keep a waiting list in case the dates have to change and there is fall out as a result. Come and learn how to use this wonderful material to make a strong\, healthy building. Book early by emailing mail@commonflora.co.uk. For more details go to https://www.commonflora.co.uk/. \n \nNB. This is not an SSB event.

SUMMARY:Final instalment of scything sessions and green haying this year?
DESCRIPTION:An ADDED SESSION: Thursday 20 August: the final instalment of scything and green haying this year? Bring scythes\, rakes and smiles to the ‘Apple a Day Orchard’ at 6pm. The plan will be to scythe the wildflower areas and spread them over the rank/scarified areas – a method known as green haying. The idea being that the seeds from the wildflowers drop down onto the soil and germinate making the rank areas more diverse. \nAnyone who has their own scythe and can safely use it is welcome as well as anyone else who wants to come and watch a traditional activity taking place. There may be an opportunity for adults to learn how to scythe but this depends on the number of trained participants available and the number of people wanting to learn. SUMMARY:South Brent Wood Fair - Postponed
DESCRIPTION:South Brent Wood Fair has been postponed. The Wood Fair organising group has taken the difficult decision to postpone the third South Brent Wood Fair planned for the 5th September and not to run it this year. This is partly due to wanting to give maximum attention to follow-up events from the South Brent Climate Fair on 18th April.

SUMMARY:South Brent Climate Fair - POSTPONED

SUMMARY:Hedges & Woodland - 'Steepers' session
DESCRIPTION:The ‘Steeper’s are a lively group of SSB volunteers who are in their ninth year of hedge laying and collecting wood for fuel. The group will be coppicing 25 year old trees\, at Penstave Copse\, to let more daylight get to the woodland floor. This will encourage natural regeneration of trees\, and wildflowers\, with benefits for insects\, small mammals\, and birds. The ‘new planting’ at the top of Penstave should become more like natural woodland\, over time. To do this work\, we have had to come to a new agreement with the Woodland Trust. We have updated Risk Assessments to take both Ash Dieback (Hymenoscyphus) and Covid19 into account. Ash dieback is progressively killing many of the ash trees\, and as the infection (and subsequent fungal infection) weakens the limbs and tree-trunks\, there is a safety issue. Wood made brittle by infection\, can lead of unpredictably falling branches\, and reduced confidence in controlling the direction of fall of each tree. \nThere will be two stewards for each session; encouraging sharing of skills and pairing inexperienced volunteers with experienced people so anyone can join in. We will monitor numbers carefully\, avoiding groups of more than six. All are welcome – children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. We have a range of tools\, and safety equipment\, but advise those joining to bring their own work gloves\, plus lunch and a drink. If you would like to attend a session please email Harry and Rowan via woodgroup@ssb.org.uk in advance. The programme is subject to weather and liable to change. See the Hedges and Woodland page on the SSB website – www.ssb.org.uk/.

SUMMARY:Hedges & Woodland – ‘Steepers’ session
DESCRIPTION:The ‘Steeper’s are a lively group of SSB volunteers who are in their ninth year of hedge laying and collecting wood for fuel. The group will be undertaking various activities in the village including coppicing\, hedging and clearing. This will encourage natural regeneration of trees\, and wildflowers\, with benefits for insects\, small mammals\, and birds. e have updated Risk Assessments to take both Ash Dieback (Hymenoscyphus) and Covid19 into account. \nSteeping dates/venues (from 10am to 3pm) for Spring 2021 are: \n\nSunday 3 January 2021 Hedging in Brookwood Close\nSunday 17 January 2021 Hedging in Springfield Terrace\nSunday 31 January 2021 Hedging in Springfield Terrace\nSunday 14 February 2021 Coppicing in Penstave Copse\nSunday 28 February 2021 Coppicing in Penstave Copse\nSunday 14 March 2021 Hedging in Harwell Lane\nSunday 28 March 2021 Clearing in Railway Wood

SUMMARY:Active Hope Course
DESCRIPTION:February – April 2021: Active Hope Course “Exploring how to face the mess we’re in without going crazy”. \nDates: Wednesday 24 February; Wednesday 3 March; Sunday 14 March; Wednesday 24 March; Sunday 28 March; and Wednesday 7 April 2021 (Wednesdays 6.30-8.45pm; Sundays 2-4.30pm) Sessions will be on-line on Zoom but COVID permitting there will be a later half day ‘Council of All Beings’ workshop outdoors. \nA six week training with a small group of people\, sharing our gratitude for life\, our human responses to this environmental crisis\, and envisaging how to move forwards inspired\, resilient and courageous. This workshop is a safe place to be with our feelings\, helping us to stay grounded\, connected and responsive to what’s happening in our lives\, our communities and our world. Unless we have spaces to feel our responses to the destruction in our world\, we can easily feel paralysed or numb – and not take the necessary action to prevent more harm. \nThe course of workshops is based on the work of Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone\, recently revised (2020) to address the urgent crisis our world is in. The group will be co-facilitated by Jeannie Hodder and John Betts. \nThis work is an offering from the facilitators but those who wish to make a donation at the end of the course may do so. This is not a requirement of attendance. Participants are expected to commit to the whole course. Spaces are limited (approx 14 places) so booking is essential. To make a booking or for more information\, please contact: Jeannie: coaching@jhodder.co.uk or John: mail@johnbetts.net. In your email\, please include a few sentences about why you want to join and what you hope to achieve from joining the group. \n
