Tuesday Fair Share

An opportunity for residents of South Brent and the surrounding area to access affordable, good quality surplus (in date) produce, minimising food waste and landfill.

Everyone is welcome; You’ll be asked to check in each time, and there is a suggested donation of £3.50. (The food is free but we need to pay transport and rent). For that you can get at least 10 items of food and groceries, from a selection of produce that changes every week and includes a selection of fruit and vegetables and store cupboard essentials. If you feel you would like to donate more than £3.50 you are welcome to. There is free parking on site at the Rec.

The main supplier is Fareshare SouthWest, a national charity that redistributes surplus food from the food industry to community groups.

Free Knitting Workshop every Wednesday

Families and children welcome with their grown ups.

Never has there been a better time to learn to knit! Come & learn from our resident expert, Sue, from Cosy Corner Crafts. Bring your own knitting or use our needles & wool to start from scratch.

Please bring us some items to mend, for example:

• your squeaky bike for oiling and a puncture to repair
• that shirt that needs some buttons
• a toaster that insisted on burning your bread every single time
• the ceramic ornament that you were given for Christmas and promptly broke
• the kitchen knives that are embarrassingly blunt (max of 3, unless our volunteer sharpeners are not busy)
• dad’s old shears that won’t even open, let alone cut a twig
• your favourite necklace that needs restringing
• a leather bag with a loose strap

If you can carry it, we will have a go at mending it! Our team of skilled volunteer repairers offer their services for free, with a café with hot drinks and delicious cakes and savouries to enjoy while your item is being repaired. Bring up to 2 small household items for repair. All for free, although we welcome donations to help cover costs.

The Repair Cafe usually runs on the second Saturday morning of January, March, May, July, and September plus the first Sunday in November. So the subsequent repair cafes will be on 14 March; 9 May; 11 July; 12 September.

Following our very successful and informative talk on Seed Saving, by Robyn Minogue, in July, we’re hoping lots of South Brent gardeners and growers have been inspired to save and dry some vegetable and flower seeds for our 2027 Seed Swap in the Old School. All seeds welcome: peas, beans, salad crops, herbs, tomatoes, flowers or whatever you have.

So please come – with your seeds – to our ‘Seed Pack and Chat’ social evening on 16 September, 6.30-9pm in the Church Rooms (through the main lychgate at St Petroc’s and turn left along the path). 

This is a great opportunity to swap information and tips on plants and seeds, and to start looking forward to a new growing season together. We will have custom-made South Brent Seed Swap envelopes into which seeds can be packed in small quantities and labelled, all ready for the Seed Swap next February. 

Drinks and snacks available, and lots of chat! 

Come and visit the 10-acre site in its amazing setting. See what we’ve done so far and get to know the land by joining us to work there for an hour or two if you can.

We’re growing potatoes again this year, and garlic, and are working on plans for a much broader range of vegetables and other crops in future years once legal formalities for the land are complete and we can begin fundraising. The project needs many different kinds of skills and interests. There’s lots to be done through the summer, from weeding, mulching and trimming to (we hope) harvesting. Or come and meet us just as an interested supporter as the project continues to develop.

Bring snacks and drinks, gloves and tools, and wear stout waterproof footwear. Sorry, no dogs on the site please. Drop in for as long as you want!
