SUMMARY:50th Anniversary Earth Day
DESCRIPTION:This is the 50th Year of Earth Day. The theme for Earth Day 2020 is climate action. The enormous challenge — but also the vast opportunities — of action on climate change have distinguished the issue as the most pressing topic for the 50th anniversary. Climate change represents the biggest challenge to the future of humanity and the life-support systems that make our world habitable. \nOn Earth Day 2020\, we seize all the tools and actions that we have\, big and small\, to change our lives and change our world\, not for one day\, but forever. While the coronavirus may force us to keep our distance\, it will not force us to keep our voices down. The only thing that will change the world is a bold and unified demand for a new way forward. We may be apart\, but through the power of digital media\, we’re also more connected than ever. \nVisit earthday.org

Ivybridge Town Council\, PL:21 and South Dartmoor Community Energy invite you on a journey of zero carbon discovery. Most people are aware that something big is happening\, the science is overwhelmingly telling us we must act now to reduce our carbon emissions. But what does that mean? Is it really that urgent? How do we figure out what to do when there is so much conflicting advice? All around the UK\, communities are coming together to make a difference. Here in Ivybridge a new network is forming to take forward a Climate Emergency Action Plan for the town so we can play our part in reaching zero carbon and preventing catastrophic climate change. On the 8th Feb we’re taking over the Watermark\, to bring the most up to date info on the science of climate change and the latest thinking and advice on the top actions to reduce your carbon footprint\, demonstrating how we can all benefit from working towards a zero carbon future. There will be stands on: Local food and farming; Home energy saving; Waste and recycling; Electric vehicles; Eco-travel ideas; Kids activities; Nature; plus Free trees! SUMMARY:Greener Ugborough Parish Talk: ‘What can you do about your CO2?’
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 18 January 2020: ‘What can you do about your CO2?’ in Ugborough Village Hall from 12.15-1pm\, after Sustainable Saturday. Greener Ugborough Parish welcomes David Roe in a public talk highlighting how we might determine our carbon footprint and practical steps we can take to reduce it. Carbon footprint\, sustainability\, CO2 emissions\, life cycle analysis – these all sound bewilderingly complex. David will boil these terms down for us\, help us digest them and impart positive steps we can all practically take. David has spent the last 25 years working with businesses ranging from the National Trust through to the Eden Project to help them to reduce their energy use and waste. Here\, with a balance of humour and the deadly serious\, David will range from washing up\, jetting to the sun\, buying online and going vegan – sometimes with unexpected results – but always based on facts and science. A free event open to all\, with no booking required. Donations towards Greener Ugborough Parish very welcome.

SUMMARY:Upstream/Downstream - Flooding & The Future - floodwater management for Buckfastleigh
DESCRIPTION:Join Plymouth University academic Thomas Richard Apollos Murphy and the Buckfastleigh flood action group for an open day to discuss potential Natural Flood Management for Buckfastleigh. The day will start in Buckfastleigh with a brief introduction on the climate changes expected for Dartmoor\, followed by a walk through the town for a tour of the impacts of the November 2012 floods. The walk will involve first hand accounts of the flooding impacts\, hearing from current residents about how these experiences and memories changed and continue to affect their lives. After this\, a lunchtime picnic on the Moor will be followed by a walk near Buckfastleigh and Dean Moor\, the headwaters of the Dean Burn and Mardle rivers. We will talk about the potential for upstream natural land management to reduce flood risk to downstream communities. The walk will be an opportunity to hear the opinions from local landowners and farmers on this strategy\, discuss the challenges they face and their future land management aspirations. The day is an opportunity for both upland and downstream communities to tell their story and come together to discuss natural flood management options for the prevention of flood risk.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday 30 March 2019: Earth Hour – 8.30-9.30pm. Hundreds of millions of people world-wide (last year over 10 million people in the UK) take part in the World Wild Life Fund’s ‘Earth Hour’. People do a wide range of things around the hour to show that they care about our planet’s future. Many choose to go ‘lights out’ and turn off devices for 60 minutes from 8.30pm in a symbolic show of solidarity with the planet. If you are planning any events or activities to mark Earth Hour locally\, please let us know. See: www.wwf.org.uk/earthhour.

SUMMARY:'Climate Change and the Extinction Rebellion’ meeting
DESCRIPTION:(NB this is not an SSB meeting) \n‘Climate Change and the Extinction Rebellion’ meeting at 7.30pm in the Old School Community Centre. An introductory meeting organised by people in South Brent concerned about climate change\, in order to discuss the background to the issues and the focus of the ‘Extinction Rebellion’ campaign. The ‘Extinction Rebellion’ (‘XR’) is an international movement that aims to promote radical change\, through nonviolent resistance and ‘respectful disruption’ and to signal to those in power the existence of an emergency situation that requires emergency action to minimise species extinction and avert climate breakdown. Its central demands are that the Government must tell the truth about the climate and wider ecological emergency\, and reverse inconsistent policies by enacting legally binding measures to reduce consumption levels\, and carbon emissions to net zero by 2025. FFI see: https://rebellion.earth/ .
