SUMMARY:Skunk Cabbage Work Parties
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays 16 & 23 February\, 2 & 9 March 2022: Dartmoor Invasive Species Project – Volunteer Work Party: More recruits needed to help dig out invasive American Skunk-Cabbage in the South Brent area. Work with ecologist Mervyn Newman and Dartmoor Ranger Ella Briens on this interesting project which has now been running for 4 years\, following Mervyn’s survey for Dartmoor National Park to help plan for the control of invasive alien species. \nRanger Ella says “For those that have helped before you will remember that it is a muddy job requiring wellies and digging\, often taking us all to fascinating locations off the beaten track as we explore hidden catchment gems! The results have been really positive and we are keeping our fingers crossed that the project will continue together with targeting the Himalayan Balsam in the catchment. If you are able to help out at all it will be very much appreciated. Please share locally with anyone who you think may be interested!” \nPlease get in contact with Mervyn directly on invasives@dartmoor.gov.uk if you can lend a hand and for more details. Tools and treats provided. \n(These events are supported by SSB but are organised by Dartmoor National Park)

SUMMARY:'Our Soil is Alive' - Shadow Puppet Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 25 February 2023: ‘Our Soil is Alive’: A Shadow Puppet Workshop by Light Bulb Fantastic from 1-4pm in the HUB in the Moor Room at the Old School Community Centre. The workshop explores the fascinating creatures that live in healthy soil and sees how they are affected by our activities above it. Participants learn about the incredible\, fantastic\, microscopic creatures\, living beneath our feet. They create their own puppets of beautiful rotifers\, sci-fi looking tardigrades and wriggling worms who perform on pre-made scenery. Here the creatures interact with the external forces that mankind inflicts on them\, and we see the results. \nThe ancient art of shadow puppetry is where 2-D articulated puppets perform between a light source and a screen\, their moving silhouettes come alive in the minds of the enchanted onlookers. Suitable for ages 7+ (Parents can ‘drop & go’ for this workshop\, or if you want to stay then please book yourself a spot so that we have the right amount of materials!!!). \nTickets on a first come\, first served basis are £12 / £15 /£9 or free (pay what you feel) for the 3-hour session and include refreshments. \nSpaces are limited so BOOK NOW on www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/our-soil-is-alive-a-shadow-puppet-workshop-tickets-534788726477 or email hub@ssb.org.uk. \nYou can download a video\, made by Kate Stubbs/Light Bulb Fantastic at this workshop\, here shadow-puppets-our-soil-is-alive_25-02-2023_video.mp4 \nhttps://ssb.org.uk/documents/184/sustainability-hub-documents/11865/shadow-puppets-our-soil-is-alive_25-02-2023_video.mp4

SUMMARY:Volunteer Work Party to help dig out Invasive American Skunk-Cabbage
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 6 April 2022: Dartmoor Invasive Species Project – Volunteer Work Party: Just when we thought it was time to wash off the muddy overalls there is another request for recruits to help dig out American Skunk-Cabbage in the Badworthy bog garden\, South Brent. Work with ecologist Mervyn Newman and Dartmoor Ranger Ella Briens on this interesting project which has now been running for three years\, following Mervyn’s survey for Dartmoor National Park to help plan for the control of invasive alien species. Ella says “It will be muddy yet worthy work and if you are able to share it that would be brilliant! We will be finishing by 3pm\, but any help at all (a couple of hours in the morning) will be very much appreciated. Bring food and drink and dress for boggy Dartmoor – we will of course have some goodies to munch on at tea break time! If anyone can join us then please email me directly ebriens@dartmoor.gov.uk and I will send on more details of time and place.” \nSee: www.dartmoor.gov.uk/wildlife-and-heritage/our-conservation-work/tackling-invasive-plants

Participants are expected to commit to the whole course and spaces are limited (max. 12 places) so booking is essential.
