DESCRIPTION:Saturday 15 March 2025: Home Composting Masterclass from 1-4pm at the SSB’s new home compost demonstration site at the Marsh Compost Site (Exeter Road South Brent TQ10 9QF – adjacent to South West Water’s site). \nThis your chance to learn all you ever wanted to know about compost – and more! Sustainable South Hams ‘compost mentors’ ‘Dr Compost’\, *Nicky Scott and Mel Harvey will will guide you through different methods of home composting and the pros and cons of each. \nLearn about home composting methods such as ‘daleks’\, ‘green cones’\, ‘tumblers’\, ‘bokashi’\, ‘hot heaps’ and ‘biochar’. We’ll take a specific look at what to do with woody offcuts and learn about the power of biochar. \nBring a sample of your own home compost and Nicky will make suggestions for how to improve it. \n  \n  \nThe event runs over 3 hours as there is so much to learn! Please bring your own notepads\, cameras and ideally\, a pop-up chair\, plus lunch and snacks. There will be ample supplies of hot drinks. Although there is some shelter\, the event will be held outside\, so please dress accordingly. DESCRIPTION:Meeting at 2pm Saturday 5th August at the Marsh (SWW site) off Exeter Rd. \nNB There are some changes to the timing of this event. \n \nWe’ll be scything the meadow and clearing the arisings which we will take to the compost site. Meet at the Marsh composting Site\, off Exeter Road at 2 pm (note changed time due to the rain forecast in the morning\, which\, although it will still be breezy\, will\, hopefully have passed over). \nYou will have an opportunity to have a go at scything or hone your technique. Any and all help with raking and clearing is greatly appreciated. Do bring a rake if you wish! No dogs\, please. Come for as little or long as you can. \nIf it is very wet n’ wild\, we will postpone\, so please check your email before you set off. \nThere will be more scything opportunities planned for 12 August (- TBC)\, to manage the wildlife and meadow areas near the roundabout and behind the Health Centre. \nFFI or to join\, please email beesbugs@ssb.org.uk

Having set up the first community composting project and ‘Proper Job’ Community Reuse Centre at Chagford in the early 1990s\, Nicky Scott became co-ordinator of the Devon Community Composting Network (DCCN) and was chair of the National Community Composting Network (CCN) for many years. He is the author of ‘Composting for all’ and many other books on composting and recycling.
