DESCRIPTION:Sunday 23 April 2023: National Alarm Test at 3pm. The Government plans to test the National Emergency Alerts Alarm system by sending a national test alarm – a siren and vibration\, lasting for up to 10 seconds\, to all smartphones that use 4G and 5G phone networks (older\, ‘non-smart’ phones will not receive the alarm). The system is now live\, enabling people to be contacted through their mobile phone in the event of there being a danger to life near to where they are (current location – not where you live or work)\, for example severe flooding or fire in the area. If that were to happen near you\, your mobile phone or tablet will receive an alert with advice about how to stay safe. The emergency alert will appear on your device’s home screen and you will need to acknowledge it before you can use other features on the phone. It will however just be a test\, so other than to acknowledge it\, you do not need to take any further action. We’ve got over 50 stalls\,  with local community groups\, organisations and businesses\, loads of free or low-cost activities and workshops for all ages\, a table-top jumble sale\, great food and drink and some fabulous entertainment lined up. Plus competitions\, quizzes and a raffle with generous prizes. \nThe stalls and activities will focus positively on themes around community\, nature and climate. Also\, in keeping with this Jubilee year\, visitors will be able to explore the past\, present and future in a ‘Timescape’ marquee. \nThe Fair will be loosely zoned around the areas of:  Energy\, Nature\, Transport\, Community\, Renewal/Waste\, and Food & Land. As well as all the fun things happening across the Fair\,  there will be lots of really useful information. Visitors can find out how to reduce energy costs\, access grants\, get advice from a local GP\, talk to renewable energy experts and much more. DESCRIPTION:Saturday 10 April 2021: Save the Children; Yemen Crisis Appeal ‘Front Gate Fundraiser’ organised by South Brent Refugee Support Network (SBRSN) Stalls from 10am-4pm in the village centre\, at artworks; outside Art House (at the Old School Community Centre); Wellington Square\, School Gardens and at various Front Gates around the village\, selling plants\, cakes\, preserves\, books\, clothes\, bric-a-brac\, cosmetics etc. A list of sellers will be available at the Cake Stall outside the Village Shop on the day. \nYemen’s children are growing up through the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. 14 million Yemenis are on the brink of famine; Six years of war has left 12.4million children needing assistance and particularly vulnerable to Coronavirus. DESCRIPTION:February – April 2021: Active Hope Course “Exploring how to face the mess we’re in without going crazy”. \nDates: Wednesday 24 February; Wednesday 3 March; Sunday 14 March; Wednesday 24 March; Sunday 28 March; and Wednesday 7 April 2021 (Wednesdays 6.30-8.45pm; Sundays 2-4.30pm) Sessions will be on-line on Zoom but COVID permitting there will be a later half day ‘Council of All Beings’ workshop outdoors. \nA six week training with a small group of people\, sharing our gratitude for life\, our human responses to this environmental crisis\, and envisaging how to move forwards inspired\, resilient and courageous. This workshop is a safe place to be with our feelings\, helping us to stay grounded\, connected and responsive to what’s happening in our lives\, our communities and our world. Unless we have spaces to feel our responses to the destruction in our world\, we can easily feel paralysed or numb – and not take the necessary action to prevent more harm. \nThe course of workshops is based on the work of Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone\, recently revised (2020) to address the urgent crisis our world is in. The group will be co-facilitated by Jeannie Hodder and John Betts. \nThis work is an offering from the facilitators but those who wish to make a donation at the end of the course may do so. This is not a requirement of attendance. Participants are expected to commit to the whole course. Spaces are limited (approx 14 places) so booking is essential. DESCRIPTION:Thursday 1 April 2021: ‘Going Wild in the Garden!’ via Zoom from 8-9.30pm: The first in an informal series of SSB ‘EcoPubHub’ evenings on helping our environment and greening our lives. Join us at this introductory skillshare workshop to swap stories and experience of wildlife gardening and pick up ideas\, tips and inspiration for creating a wildlife-friendly garden. With so much of our common British wildlife in collapse across most of the countryside\, we can really make a difference in how we tend our gardens. Starting off with some short talks on ‘Wildlife friendly planting’ with Jeremy Sabel; ‘Attracting wild birds’ with Mike Goss of South Brent Birders; ‘Creating a wildlife pond’ with Jude Bishop\, we’ll then break out into smaller groups to share our own skills and experience.
