SUMMARY:Talk: 'Plankton\, Climate and Gaia'
DESCRIPTION:Friday 17 April 2026: ’Plankton\, Climate and Gaia’ \nThe 6th talk in SSB’s Nature/Wildlife series at 7.30pm in the main hall at Old School Community Centre. \nDr Frances Hopkins from the Plymouth Marine Laboratory will talk about how marine life helps to regulate our planet. \nEarth’s climate is shaped not just by winds and oceans\, but by life itself. Dr Hopkins will introduce the remarkable world of microscopic marine plankton – the tiny organisms that produce half of the oxygen we breath\, absorb vast amounts of carbon dioxide\, and even help clouds to form. \nDrawing on Gaia theory\, which explores how life and the environment interact to keep earth habitable\, she will show how the earths ‘invisible forest’ plays a central role in regulating our climate. She will explain how her research uncovers the chemical conversations between the sea and the sky and how these delicate feedbacks are being affected by climate change. \nA fascinating\, hopeful journey into the hidden systems that keep our planet in balance. \nAll welcome; Refreshments available; \nDonations help us do more!

SUMMARY:Skunk Cabbage Work Parties
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays 16 & 23 February\, 2 & 9 March 2022: Dartmoor Invasive Species Project – Volunteer Work Party: More recruits needed to help dig out invasive American Skunk-Cabbage in the South Brent area. Work with ecologist Mervyn Newman and Dartmoor Ranger Ella Briens on this interesting project which has now been running for 4 years\, following Mervyn’s survey for Dartmoor National Park to help plan for the control of invasive alien species. \nRanger Ella says “For those that have helped before you will remember that it is a muddy job requiring wellies and digging\, often taking us all to fascinating locations off the beaten track as we explore hidden catchment gems! The results have been really positive and we are keeping our fingers crossed that the project will continue together with targeting the Himalayan Balsam in the catchment. If you are able to help out at all it will be very much appreciated. Please share locally with anyone who you think may be interested!” \nPlease get in contact with Mervyn directly on invasives@dartmoor.gov.uk if you can lend a hand and for more details. Tools and treats provided. \n(These events are supported by SSB but are organised by Dartmoor National Park)

SUMMARY:Himalayan Balsam Bashing
DESCRIPTION:Friday 10 June 2022 (changed date) from 7.30 – 9.30 pm. Venue tbc. SSB and Dartside Explorer Scouts are teaming up to spend a cheery evening tackling a species that’s invading areas of Dartmoor: Himalayan Balsam. If left unchecked\, this prolific plant will readily out compete and further endanger our native flowers\, depriving insects of habitat\, and birds of a food source. Many hands make light work\, and all SSB members are welcome to attend. Himalyan Balsam is very easy to hand-pull\, so no great strength is required. Gloves are a good idea – and stout footwear is a must to cope with uneven and hilly ground at the venue not far from South Brent. Bring refreshments and a smile. \n‘For further information\, please contact Hayden Gabriel on YAA@SSB.org.uk‘

SUMMARY:Dartmoor Invasive Species Project: More volunteers needed
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 28 July 2021: Dartmoor Invasive Species Project: Volunteers needed again. Dartmoor Ranger Ella Briens says: “We have been doing well regarding helping ecologist Mervyn Newman in the South Brent area with Himalayan Balsam and American Skunk Cabbage removal! Thank you to those that have been able to help out so far.  This time we will be meeting at Lydia Bridge at 10am and will be out from 10am to 3pm pulling more Himalayan Balsam.  If you can spare some time to give us a hand that would be fantastic …. but any help really appreciated even if you can’t make the whole day. Please dress for working in scrubby woodland and remember sunscreen\, hats\, gloves and plenty to eat and drink – we will have treats!!! Please do let Mervyn know directly by email if you can make it: mervynnewman@btinternet.com and contact him if you might be able to help on a different day as he is out on Dartmoor tacking Invasive Species most days at the moment!”
