DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 6 April 2022: Dartmoor Invasive Species Project – Volunteer Work Party: Just when we thought it was time to wash off the muddy overalls there is another request for recruits to help dig out American Skunk-Cabbage in the Badworthy bog garden\, South Brent. Work with ecologist Mervyn Newman and Dartmoor Ranger Ella Briens on this interesting project which has now been running for three years\, following Mervyn’s survey for Dartmoor National Park to help plan for the control of invasive alien species. Ella says “It will be muddy yet worthy work and if you are able to share it that would be brilliant! We will be finishing by 3pm\, but any help at all (a couple of hours in the morning) will be very much appreciated. Bring food and drink and dress for boggy Dartmoor – we will of course have some goodies to munch on at tea break time! Following the survey conducted by Mervyn for Dartmoor National Park to help plan for the control of invasive alien species\, they will be will be working in Penstave Copse\, pulling Himalayan Balsam and de-seeding ‘American Skunk-Cabbage’. They will be on site from 10am and working on until about 3pm. If you can\, please spare the time to join them (even for an hour or so). They will meet on the footpath where the route enters ‘access land’ at approx. GR 692 609; – you can find them by coming North up along the footpath from Lydia Bridge\, and through ‘fat man’s alley’ and onto the Woodland Trust’s Penstave Copse. You can park on the roadside leading from Brent to Lydia Bridge or if space in the Station Yard car park. Bring a packed lunch and drink and your own gloves if you have them…..and we will bring cake! There will be an early evening event from 6.30 – 8.00pm in the Village Hall\, led by different groups and environmental experts to support and advise on living with care for the environment\, while saving money at the same time. DESCRIPTION:Friday 20 September 2019: Global Day of Climate Action. Millions of school children and students across the globe have struck to demand an end to the age of fossil fuels and climate justice for everyone. At the beginning of a week of actions\, today’s Climate Strike\, with the TUC calling on workers to join in and support them with a 30 minute stoppage at lunchtimes and before & after work\, promises to be the biggest yet. There will be events in Exeter at 11am in Bedford Square\, Princesshay (see Facebook) and Plymouth at 12 noon at the Starbucks entrance to Drakes Circus (see Facebook). The following week will see the UN Youth Climate Summit on Saturday 21 September and UN Climate Action Summit on Monday 23 September 2019.

Ecologist Mervyn Newman has planned volunteer work parties focussing on Himalayan Balsam over the Summer on the River Avon and its tributaries northwards from South Brent on Friday 2 August\, Thursday 22 August and Thursday 12 September. Each day will run from 10am until 3.30pm and any help will be greatly appreciated. This follows a survey conducted by Mervyn for Dartmoor National Park to help plan for the control of invasive alien species (Himalayan Balsam and ‘American Skunk-Cabbage’ in particular but also noting Japanese Knotweed and Monkeyflower). If you are interested in helping please contact Mervyn directly on invasives@dartmoor.gov.uk.
