SUMMARY:Led Bike Ride: South Brent to Slapton - D-Day 80th Anniversary Ride
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays 13 & 27 June; 4 & 11 July 2024; 10am-3pm:  Led Bike Rides: South Brent to Slapton – D-Day 80th Anniversary Ride (approx. 30miles return). \nThe starting point is at Bishopsmead\, South Brent. We leave South Brent on the quiet road to Avonwick then pick up the new Primrose Trail towards Diptford. We climb out of Diptford and have a rest at the top of the hill. We then stay on a B road to Morleigh and then take the busy road for half a mile before turning Left for Slapton. We will stay on this 5 mile lane until we get into Slapton Village. We then head along the beach road for Torcross stopping to see the War memorial\, WW2 tank and Billy Can Cafe. \nOur return is along the same route which is approximately 15 miles. D-Day 80th Anniversary Ride from Soth Brent towards Slapton looking at the American Training area for the Normandy Invasion of WW2. We cycle mainly country lanes across the South Hams to an area of historical and AONB with quaint villages and scenery. \nThe preferred route is 90% on country lanes and a distance of about 30 miles. These roads can be busy and riders will have to pull in where necessary to allow traffic to overtake. \nWe will stop for a packed lunch at Slapton and visit a cafe. We will look at the war memorial\, the American Sherman Tank\, the beach\, Slapton Ley and Slapton community park. We expect to stop for 15 mins on the way there and further rest stops on the way back. \nBring a packed lunch and money for cake and coffee when needed\, plus helmet\, spare inner tube\, mobile phone etc. Suitable for Road bike\, eBike; Mountain Bike\, Hybrid (road tyres). We never leave anyone behind. \n  \nOrganised by British Cycling and led by experienced ride leaders\, these rides are a great way to explore new places and to meet new people who enjoy cycling. They are suitable for all levels of experience\, so whether you are a beginner or a seasoned cyclist\, you can find a ride that is right for you. \nTo sign up for a ride\, or for map and more info; and for rides further afield in the area\, go to www.letsride.co.uk/ and enter ‘South Brent’ in the search box. \n  \nNB. SUMMARY:The World’s Biggest Bike Ride
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 12 September 2020: World’s Biggest Bike Ride: The launch of the inaugural ‘World’s Biggest Bike Ride’ is being planned by Cycling UK giving everyone a great reason to get out on their bikes (following social distancing rules of course). Imagine what it would be like if everyone who owns or has access to a bike took part! That would remind us all how awesome cycling is and really would send a message of support for a new era of transport and ‘Active Travel’. It’s not about distance or duration\, it’s about riding your way\, together. It’s for tots on balance bikes; energetic workers on e-bikes; adventurers on mountain bikes\, for juniors\, seniors\, the young at heart\, anyone getting back in the saddle. By joining the World’s Biggest Bike Ride\, together we can get behind this exciting step change for cycling and realise the benefits for our health and for the future. Cycling can – and will – make the world a better place; it improves our health\, our wellbeing\, our air quality and our ability to travel safely. So\, if you like riding bikes\, get ‘Pumped Up to cycle’ and go for a spin. Just ride; log your trip here; and print out your certificate! See https://www.cyclinguk.org/pumpedup.

SUMMARY:Walking & Cycling in and around Ivybridge Issues & Opportunities: Community Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Walking & Cycling in and around Ivybridge Issues & Opportunities: Community Workshop from 3:30-7 pm in Ivybridge Library\, The Watermark Centre\, Erme Court\, Leonards Rd\, Ivybridge\, PL21 0SZ. Local sustainability group\, PL21 Transition Town Initiative\, with the support of Ivybridge Town Council\, has commissioned Sustrans to undertake a study into improving active travel in and around Ivybridge. With Sustrans\, they have teamed up with Highways England to tackle traffic congestion\, explain health benefits and contribute to climate change by asking you to tell us what you think about walking and cycling. Whether you live in Ivybridge\, South Brent\, Ugborough\, Ermington\, Cornwood or Lee Mill\, you are invited to pop in\, come and think about issues\, opportunities\, constraints\, possibilities and tell us what you think about walking and cycling in Ivybridge and the local areas. When nationally 25% of all car journeys are 2 miles or less and so few people walk or cycle yet so many people do so in Northern Europe\, what would encourage you to change your travel patterns to walk or cycle\, especially to work or school? Tell us about things that help and things that don’t! Our vision is that every child age 12 upwards should be able to walk or cycle to school unsupervised in safety from everywhere in our area. Staff will be on hand from Sustrans to answer queries and local volunteers will be there to engage with you. See also workshop on 10 September. FFI: please contact iain.stewart@sustrans.org.uk.

SUMMARY:PL21 Transition Town initiative open meeting with talk on ‘Active Travel’ (eg walking/cycling) by Sustrans Regional Director
DESCRIPTION:AGM of PL21 Transition Town Initiative and open meeting at 7pm at The Watermark\, Ivybridge. Guest speaker James Cleeton\, Regional Director South for Sustrans\, the charity that makes it easier to walk and cycle\, is one of the foremost speakers in the country on community engagement\, street design and travel behaviour. His illustrated talk\, ‘Active Travel’ will stimulate discussion and challenge current attitudes. In an era where people are becoming more health conscious as well as learning more how to care for our environment\, active travel is possibly the least understood and the benefits offer so much. – Find out what communities can do to improve their streets This is in the context of Sustrans having just launched its national ‘Paths for Everyone’ strategy at the House of Commons\, to review and upgrade the whole of the National Cycle Network (see https://www.sustrans.org.uk/pathsforeveryone). Current projects are helping local communities such as Ivybridge and South Brent link up. A recent meeting chaired by (Sir) Gary Streeter MP with principals of Ivybridge Community College (which with 2\,500 students\, is especially keen to reduce car dependency and encourage students to cycle or walk) and Dame Hannah Rogers School as well as SHDC and Ivybridge Town Council discussed the development of the ‘South Dartmoor Towns Project’ which aims to secure improved walking and cycling routes through Ivybridge including travel to work and place of study. The scope of the project includes proposed improvements to National Cycle Network Route 2 from Lee Mill to South Brent. Development of this section is moving to the next stage\, with PL21 is seeking to employ Sustrans to carry out the design and community consultations. There will also be information and presentations from ‘Cycle South Dartmoor’ on the proposals for improving the connectivity of South Dartmoor Towns between Ivybridge\, South Brent\, Buckfastleigh and Ashburton and from the ‘Primrose Trail Working Group’ on progress with a safe\, accessible\, multi-purpose ‘Primrose Trail’ for walkers and cyclists between South Brent and Kingsbridge.
