SUMMARY:Scything Time - 2 - Raking the Hay
DESCRIPTION:5 years ago\, a hardworking bunch of SSB volunteers now known as ‘The 4Bs’ (Brent Bees Bugs & Butterflies) turned an overlooked patch of consistently mown grass verge in the Exeter Road / Play park area\, into a diverse wildflower meadow \n  \n… and every summer we scythe it. As we did yesterday (Saturday 10 August) \nOn Sunday 11 August from 10-12noon we will finish raking up the green hay and take it (with a vehicle) to the Marsh Composting site. Bring a rake if you can. \nThere will be other opportunities to scythe in Brent this year – FFI contact beesbugs@ssb.org.uk. \nSee: https://ssb.org.uk/projects/brent-bees-bugs-and-butterflies-4bs/ \nThe 4Bs are still looking for a Project co-ordinator\, if you’re passionate about nature and have a bit of time to give you could help preserve this meadow and other projects that aim to increase biodiversity in South Brent.

SUMMARY:Mini-BioBlitz at the ‘Apple a Day' Orchard
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 1 July 2023: Mini-BioBlitz from 10am – 1pm at the ‘Apple a day Orchard’ behind the Health Centre\, Plymouth Rd. A BioBlitz is an ecological survey of an area or site involving the community (citizen scientists) and some experts\, with the aim of identifying and recording as many species as possible in a short amount of time. So … come and see the wildlife in the Apple a Day Orchard at the South Brent Health Centre. Experts will be on hand\, and you will learn how to identify and record wildflowers\, animals\, insects and mini beasts. This will highlight the natural beauty and increasing biodiversity of the wildflower patch and orchard\, created by Sustainable South Brent’s ‘4Bs’ group (Brent Bees Bugs & Butterflies) and the community in 2019. The record we create will also serve as a new baseline to compare future surveys. Suitable for all ages … we’ll have more info on accessibility shortly. There is a car park at the Health Centre. Equipment provided – please BYO refreshments. All are welcome\, but no dogs or other pets\, please. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. Feel free to bring ID guides\, notebooks\, 1m quadrats\, hand lenses\, swoop nets etc if you have any – best to label them with your name. If the weather is extreme in any way\, we will use the Hub as a base. If you have good knowledge of local species\, especially grassland plants and insects\, and would like to volunteer as an expert\, please get in touch. It would be great to know if you will be joining us\, so please do let us know if you will be coming. \nAny questions to beesbugs@ssb.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Final instalment of scything sessions and green haying this year?
DESCRIPTION:An ADDED SESSION: Thursday 20 August: the final instalment of scything and green haying this year? Bring scythes\, rakes and smiles to the ‘Apple a Day Orchard’ at 6pm. The plan will be to scythe the wildflower areas and spread them over the rank/scarified areas – a method known as green haying. The idea being that the seeds from the wildflowers drop down onto the soil and germinate making the rank areas more diverse. \nAnyone who has their own scythe and can safely use it is welcome as well as anyone else who wants to come and watch a traditional activity taking place. There may be an opportunity for adults to learn how to scythe but this depends on the number of trained participants available and the number of people wanting to learn. You can also help in other ways such as raking up the grasses and loading into dumpy bags. Please bring your own rakes and dumpy bags if you have them. We will transport the grasses/wildflowers to the Marsh Composting Site so offers of transport would be welcome too. \nPlease note: \n\nPlease do not bring dogs.
